About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
The vehicle will throw itself in the park and shut off and not restart in the middle of traffic. It's not even stopped. You can hear the parking pin trying to engage until it slows to a point and then it'll slam on and lock up the brakes and skid to a stall. This has happened four times now and the vehicle has been in the shop the entire summer. Someone is going to get killed from this.

I have a 2023 Wagoneer L - series II carbide. On 2 separate occasions my Wagoneer has powered down and put itself into park. 7/22/24 - Pulling out of a parking lot, and as I was pulling out alerts popped up and put itself into park. I turned the vehicle off and on again, and proceeded to put the vehicle in drive and it instantly put itself into park. I again, restarted the vehicle and was able to drive. 7/23/24 - I pulled out of a parking lot onto the road. As I was driving on the road (going about 20 MPH) the alerts appeared and as I was trying to get over out of traffic, the car powered down and slammed itself into park. This time I was able to press the start button for it to start and was able to drive it.

This vehicle has a persistent brake fluid leaking problem. Anytime the vehicle is parked at a ~ 7% incline, where the front of the car is lower than the rear, the car leaks material amounts of brake fluid. The dealer has tried many times (over 4 times) to fix the issue by replacing all relevant parts-?? it still leaks. Based on my observations, there appears to be a design flaw in the brake fluid reservoir and the reservoir cap, it can not keep the fluid in the system. The risks arising from the persistent leaks include: 1.) catastrophic brake failure due to insufficient fluid in the system, 2.) fire risk, engine compartment has flammable brake fluid places it should not be, 3.) environmental contamination risk, and 4.) slip and fall risk from leaving slippery puddles of hazardous material ever place this vehicle is parked on an incline.

Leaks break fluid when parked at an angle (nose facing down hill). Heat seems to be a factor because it leaks more on hot days. The dealer has tried to remedy the problem no fewer than 4 times, replacing many major components. There appears to be a design flaw in the master cylinder area as that is where the brake fluid keeps leaking from. I have to imagine if you keep losing break fluid it is a safety issue and an environmental one.
