Issue with the WCM (Wireless Control Module). It is mounted under the plastic behind the steering wheel between the dash and the wheel (left of ignition key hole). It controls the remote key entry (RKE), ignition key programming and remote start. There's also an antenna that connects to the WCM.
Only a dealer can replace the module. The ECM and all keys have to be reprogrammed when the module is replaced or the Jeep will not start. It is solid state and susceptible to static electricity that can travel through the key when inserting it into the ignition.

My Jeep just stopped working and would not start. I red light I had never seen before appeared on the dash. I got online and found that there was a problem with the key and the security system in the Jeep would not allow it to start. So we went to the dealer and were told we had to have the car towed to them for it to be fixed.
Had the car towed for $150 and then the had to update the software in the ECM for $160. This fixed the problem but they could not tell me why it stopped working. The key was not faulty and did not need to be replaced. Why should I have to pay for a software update to get my car to run? If it was a choice, I would understand. It would be like if you bought a new cell phone and every time there was a software update your phone would stop working and you had to take it to a carrier dealer and pay for the software just to be able to use your phone. I had no choice to run older software and not get the update in my Jeep.
When I contact Jeep about this they said that since my Jeep I start out of the standard 3 year 36,000 mile warranty that I was responsible for the upgrade that I did not want but had to have. I was told by the dealer that it is like when the A/C goes out in your house it is your choice to get it fixed or not. He also tried to compare it to a computer that needs an update and you have to pay for it. The problem is my computer did not cost me $38,000.
Just disappointed in Jeep.
