Bought this Wrangler JL Rubicon for our son after graduating college. I had noticed the moisture buildup in the right tail light even on the day we test drove it. I brought it up but they said that would be a Jeep warranty issue, not theirs. (Welcome to Massachusetts). The pressure to buy because of post-Covid supply chain issues and used car prices being sky-high we scrambled to buy the Jeep and forgot about the water in the tail lamp.
Months pass, and I noticed it again, so attempted to contact Jeep about it. They said "sorry that component is way out of warranty". Great. I came to learn that because it has the side-detection component built into it, it is a very expensive part. Few are available on the used car parts market and those prices are as high if not higher than new.
My son called to say that the tail lamp has failed, flickers and often doesn't light. LED circuits hate moisture. This is a VERY common problem for these LED lamps on Wranglers, which came as part of an expensive upgrade from the factory. Now I am forced to look far and wide to find a replacement without it breaking my bank account. Some are listed as high as $780 used!! Insane.
Here's the thing - the part number on Mopar's website has changed TEN TIMES since 2018, which means they apparently keep trying to fix the design to prevent it from taking on moisture, as this is a very common problem from what I've seen on Jeep forums. I'm shocked it's not already listed on THIS site! Next thing I notice just today is that the MOST RECENT PART NUMBER IS LISTED AS DISCONTINUED due to supply chain issues. WTH?!?! What are people supposed to do??
