When I crank up my Jeep start backing out of my driveway and make the turn to get on to the roadway my steering wheel locks up as I amd driving foward almost causing me to have an accident. Then about 1/2 mile down the road I came to a roundabout, it was almost impossible for mento enter and exit the roundabout, and for a second time in less than one mile the locking up of my steering wheel could have caused me to wreck and kill myself or someone else. This has happened to me 4 different times within the 7,000 miles my Jeep has on it, somthing needs to be done before a life is lost to this defect.

Loose steering, dead spot in steering wheel, drifting, excessive steering wheel corrections to keep vehicle in the lane, sometimes outside temperature changes steering characteristics, I feel this is a major safety issue as these problems almost caused me an accident driving at highway speed's and as a result of vehicle wondering I was pulled over by police officer for a vehicle wondering, I've owned a lot of Jeep never had this type of problem, I feel this could be dangerous for certain drivers, it happens most on perfectly smooth pavement in a straight line, in rough roads it seems to be ok windee roads is ok only in a straight line at highway speed's you cannot keep the vehicle in the lane.

While driving on the highway, when the Jeep hits a slight bump or bridge expansion joint the steering wheel and front end wobble excessively. This has occurred on five occasions. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 60 mph. On two of the occasions I needed to slow down to 40 mph for the wobble to stop. This is an 2018 Jeep Wrangler with no modifications. The first time this occurred the Jeep had around 1500 miles on it. It currently has less than 3000 miles on it. The dealership replaced the steering damper. I have read other reports that this does not fix the problem, it only masks the true problem. I have not had the Jeep on the highway since the part has been replaced. The other issue I have found with the Jeep is a slight shaking in the steering wheel at speeds around 70 mph. You do not need to hit a bump for this to occur. This vehicle has "death wobble" as it has been called. When driving at highway speeds and hitting a bump, bridge joint, or imperfection in the road, the front end violently shakes. If loosen grip on wheel it gets worse. It will continue for miles shaking the vehicle excessively. Only way to stop the shaking is to slow to about 50 mph. Started at about 12, 400 miles. Took to shop and their guy called it death wobble.the more you drive the worse it gets, and in Nov about 14th or so they had me come in and put a aftermarket hd steering stabilizer on it.it worked for about 1500 miles then the wobble returned.I reported it and on the 17th Dec they had me come in and put factory stabilizer bar on and toed in my front alignment. That worked for two days. Wobble came back and I reported it. The more I drive the worse it gets. I went to shop on 31 Dec to see what we are doing. They said they would get back to me. Problem is not stabilizers and toe alignment. Geometric and something is wearing out causing all this.the effectiveness of stabilizers are lasting less each time. Band aid for the bigger issue.I have owned 18 Jeep and have 4 currently, all Wrangler/tj/CJ. None have done this or do this.modified or not. And this new 2018 jl is stock.

At expressway speeds 55 - 70 mph, when the vehicle hits a small bump or transitions the pavement like on an overpass, vehicle wobbles and steering wheel shacks. Jeep has 5000 miles and is stock. This was our first trip where we drove over 50mph.

During highway driving, between 70-75 mph, when I hit a defect in the road, the car will begin to shake violently. Sometimes it stops when I decelerate, but other times, I have to pull off on to the shoulder. My Jeep was leased in August 2018. I first noticed the shaking in November. I have alerted my dealership's service department.

If the car was going over 60 and hit a bump, the steering wheel would shake uncontrollably also causing the tires and the whole car to be uncontrollable. Would have to brake and try to get it back in control. Happened 6 times since I purchased the car in September the lasdt time it happened it scared me because it took a little while to get control of the car. I took it to napleton Jeep and as I was explaining the situation she stopped and said it was a safety issue meaning I needed to clean out the car and would not be able to drive it. She said they had a Jeep there for over 25 days and she did not know when I would be getting it back. It was explained to me it is a steering wheel damper. Over rated shock. I have called numerous times both the dealer and Jeep. They have given me 3 different dates as to when the part will be in. None of those have come to forwishen. Someone was going to call me and no one ever does.

On 1/2/2019 I was driving to work in the morning. The front end started wobbling rapidly after hitting a pothole on the highway. My speed was approximately 70 M.P.H. I took my foot off the accelerator and slowly braked. The wobble did not stop until I was around 55 M.P.H. I was not able to get out of the center lane because traffic was heavy and running past me in both lanes. This is the second time this occurred. The first time I just thought is was a fluke because I hit two potholes in a row. That happened about one month ago. I am making an appointment with my dealer for a service inspection. I have felt small wobbles since I got the vehicle. These two were sustained and only stopped after slowing to around 55 mph.

On three separate occasions I have experienced what is known as the "death wobble" where the Jeep feels like it is off balance and shifting from side to side; almost like you are sliding on ice. This happens at a rate of speed of 45 mph or less. My Jeep has 5,400 miles on it and has never been modified.

Experienced death wobble today. I was on the highway going about 70-75 mph and my steering wheel locked and started violently vibrating. I felt the vibration from under the seats as well. The only time it stopped was when I slowed down to about 40 mph. I couldn't move the steering wheel at all.

  • 10,000 miles
Now that it's early winter and highways are becoming rough I'm experiencing what is referred to as the 'death wobble' on my new jl Wrangler with 10,000 miles and no alterations. I took a trip and experienced 4 separate extreme steering wobbles at highway speed where I had to slow down below 55 mph to get it to stop. One time I was passing a semi with 2 vehicles behind me that were not to impressed with my slowing down in the passing lane where they almost hit me from behind. The next day I experienced another getting on the bypass in town on the on ramp from hitting a chuck hole. I have to limit my speed to under 62 mph to reduce the issue. I'm paying way too much for this vehicle to have this scary of an issue. The wobble isn't as scary as slowing down in traffic randomly at highway speed. This is a major flaw.

Completely stock Jeep jl safari with 1469 miles has severe front end shaking at speeds between 70-75 when hitting overpass highway joints or drain joints. I have not replicated this at lower speeds. It stops when you slow down which could be a safety hazard in traffic at such speed.

Wrangler 6-cyl

  • 700 miles
My brand new 2018 Wrangler jl has the "death wobble": when traveling at highway speeds and I hit a sharp bump, the front end shakes uncontrollably. I need to take my foot off the gas, get into the breakdown lane and go down to close to zero mph before the shaking stops, then I need to re-merge into traffic. Very scary (I usually have family in car with me) and very dangerous. It's in the shop now. Parts are on backorder and they won't release it to me until its fixed--I presume B/C its too dangerous. I experienced the death wobble 7 times between when I drove it off the lot and was able to secure an appointment with the dealer.
