  • 1,500 miles
While driving on the highway, when the Jeep hits a slight bump or bridge expansion joint the steering wheel and front end wobble excessively. This has occurred on five occasions. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 60 mph. On two of the occasions I needed to slow down to 40 mph for the wobble to stop. This is an 2018 Jeep Wrangler with no modifications. The first time this occurred the Jeep had around 1500 miles on it. It currently has less than 3000 miles on it. The dealership replaced the steering damper. I have read other reports that this does not fix the problem, it only masks the true problem. I have not had the Jeep on the highway since the part has been replaced. The other issue I have found with the Jeep is a slight shaking in the steering wheel at speeds around 70 mph. You do not need to hit a bump for this to occur. The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. While driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle traversed a pothole and experienced what was known as the death wobble. The contact was able to slow down the vehicle, which corrected the failure. The vehicle was taken to bill estes Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (located at 745 E 56th St, brownsburg, in 46112, (317) 620-5175) where it was diagnosed that the track bar or sway bar needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred five times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 4,000.

This vehicle has "death wobble" as it has been called. When driving at highway speeds and hitting a bump, bridge joint, or imperfection in the road, the front end violently shakes. If loosen grip on wheel it gets worse. It will continue for miles shaking the vehicle excessively. Only way to stop the shaking is to slow to about 50 mph. Started at about 12, 400 miles. Took to shop and their guy called it death wobble.the more you drive the worse it gets, and in Nov about 14th or so they had me come in and put a aftermarket hd steering stabilizer on it.it worked for about 1500 miles then the wobble returned.I reported it and on the 17th Dec they had me come in and put factory stabilizer bar on and toed in my front alignment. That worked for two days. Wobble came back and I reported it. The more I drive the worse it gets. I went to shop on 31 Dec to see what we are doing. They said they would get back to me. Problem is not stabilizers and toe alignment. Geometric and something is wearing out causing all this.the effectiveness of stabilizers are lasting less each time. Band aid for the bigger issue.I have owned 18 Jeep and have 4 currently, all Wrangler/tj/CJ. None have done this or do this.modified or not. And this new 2018 jl is stock.

During highway driving, between 70-75 mph, when I hit a defect in the road, the car will begin to shake violently. Sometimes it stops when I decelerate, but other times, I have to pull off on to the shoulder. My Jeep was leased in August 2018. I first noticed the shaking in November. I have alerted my dealership's service department.

If the car was going over 60 and hit a bump, the steering wheel would shake uncontrollably also causing the tires and the whole car to be uncontrollable. Would have to brake and try to get it back in control. Happened 6 times since I purchased the car in September the lasdt time it happened it scared me because it took a little while to get control of the car. I took it to napleton Jeep and as I was explaining the situation she stopped and said it was a safety issue meaning I needed to clean out the car and would not be able to drive it. She said they had a Jeep there for over 25 days and she did not know when I would be getting it back. It was explained to me it is a steering wheel damper. Over rated shock. I have called numerous times both the dealer and Jeep. They have given me 3 different dates as to when the part will be in. None of those have come to forwishen. Someone was going to call me and no one ever does.

On 1/2/2019 I was driving to work in the morning. The front end started wobbling rapidly after hitting a pothole on the highway. My speed was approximately 70 M.P.H. I took my foot off the accelerator and slowly braked. The wobble did not stop until I was around 55 M.P.H. I was not able to get out of the center lane because traffic was heavy and running past me in both lanes. This is the second time this occurred. The first time I just thought is was a fluke because I hit two potholes in a row. That happened about one month ago. I am making an appointment with my dealer for a service inspection. I have felt small wobbles since I got the vehicle. These two were sustained and only stopped after slowing to around 55 mph.

My brand new 2018 Wrangler jl has the "death wobble": when traveling at highway speeds and I hit a sharp bump, the front end shakes uncontrollably. I need to take my foot off the gas, get into the breakdown lane and go down to close to zero mph before the shaking stops, then I need to re-merge into traffic. Very scary (I usually have family in car with me) and very dangerous. It's in the shop now. Parts are on backorder and they won't release it to me until its fixed--I presume B/C its too dangerous. I experienced the death wobble 7 times between when I drove it off the lot and was able to secure an appointment with the dealer.

Wrangler

  • 10,800 miles
On the highway while traveling straight ahead at speeds above 65 mph any time the vehicle is introduced to a bump, dip in the highway, transition to a bridge or change in pavement the steering wheel shakes violently and the vehicle is virtually uncontrollable. In order to get the vehicle to stop shaking speed must be reduced to 30 mph or lower. The vehicle is not drivable at highway speed as every bump, dip or road transition causes this symptom.

The steering wheel and front end will start shaking at higher speed after hitting some small bump. It's getting so bad I've to slow way down on the freeway to get the Jeep back under control. It wobbles from one side of the lane to the other. It's at the dealership now but they don't know what'ss truly wrong with the Jeep. The Jeep is new with less then 13000 miles. It's also the new jl modle

problem #75

Dec 012018

Wrangler

  • 22,000 miles
Violent shake in steering wheel and the beginning of loss of control of the vehicle. Specifically at highway speed when you drive over a bump such as a bridge expansion joint, the steering wheel will begin shaking back and forth violently. This resonates throughout the vehicle. It can continue for in excess of 15 seconds and I need to reduce the Jeep's speed to less than 40mph, at which time the shaking generally stops. Slowing to 40mph in highway traffic is dangerous to me and others on the highway. If in a low traction situation (such as snow) this would likely result in total loss of control of the Jeep. This has been to the dealer 3 times for this problem. Because the dealer is located in a rural area they have been unwilling to drive to a highway and therefore have not replicated the problem. The last time I went to the dealer I showed the dealership manager a video of this occurring, and he was appalled and said it should not happen and that I should call Jeep customer care which I did. I have called on December 1,12,19,26 and 27. The case has been assigned to a case manager, but they have not called me. I have attempted to escalate to a manager, but I have told they are busy and nothing they can do, Jeep has a serious safety issue with my car and they have to date refused to even call me back ( I have also confirmed my phone numbers each time I have called and had them recorded in the case record).

Steering and control drastically impaired when hitting a bump over 50 mph. Car and steering wheel violently shake and causes me to lose control of the vehicle. Car is stock with 0 modifications and less that 700 miles on it. Whoever says this is not a safety concern is wrong. I nearly crashed on the highway going 55 mph. Family will not drive with me in the car anymore due to issue. This is a brand new car. How can this be justified?

Death wobble when hitting bumps on the highway above 60mph. I had to pull over and slow down to 45 mph for it to stop. Dealer replaced the stabilizer with an aftermarket one since the replacement part is on backorder and the issue is still present.a steering stabilizer will not fix the issue, it only masks it. The vehicle has 1200 miles on it and is completely stock. Their is something wrong with either the track bar joints or the steering geometry. Fca will not admit the know its an issue.

While driving at 55-75 mph, when hitting a bump, the wheels start bouncing erratically and the steering wheel shakes violently. The only way to get it to stop is to slow down to 40-50 mph. Out of all the cars and trucks I've ever driven, I've never experienced anything even close to this. Everyone in the car freaked out and now no-one in my family will drive the car. It's a new Wrangler, still < 10,000 miles and no modifications to anything - completely stock. This has happened about 20-25 times. Our recent 3 hour drive on the expressway, it happened 4 times.
