Optima LX 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

The problem with steering was annoying. The steering wheel pulls while on the highway to the left, but in the city limits it does not. I took the car to dealership 2x and they did not do anything. I then called KIA customer service and they called the dealership I was dealing with and an appointment was made for the service technician to test drive my car. They ended up replacing the entire steering column and the electronic power steering. My steering wheel is much better and no problems so far. It's been 2wks and I have been on the hwy.

Optima EX 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 559 miles

As many others have stated (albeit somewhat exaggerated), the steering on my 2014 Kia Optima EX is extremely sensitive and does not seem to have a "go straight" center position. I first noticed the problem on our first long road trip with the new car, at around 900KM. I noticed driving on long stretches of highway the car constantly requires steering adjustments. My hands & arms would actually grow tired / sore from having to constantly adjust the steering. The car definitely prefers to wander to the right. Adjusting the steering back left, the car would then drift left, until adjusted again. Rinse and repeat.

The problem is much less noticeable while city driving and I can see why many people are still buying Optima's despite this issue, because they simply don't notice it until after their purchase and have driven it for 500-600km.

That being said, it is not a deal-breaker in my opinion. Many people saying it makes the car "undriveable at highway speeds" is just silly. It is certainly annoying though and I wish there was an adjustment the dealer could make to make so it has a centering position, but as I've read, their doesn't seem to be a fix to this.

I am going to take mine into the dealer and have them check the alignment since the car does seem to pull to the right by default.

Optima LX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100 miles

I have owned a 2011 KIA Optima LX since 2011 and I Am completely satisfied with it, never a complaint with 46,000 miles on it. I liked it so much I just purchased another New KIA OPTIMA 2014 for my wife. Since I already owned an OPTIMA I felt I knew what I was getting.

I drove it for the first time last week and there is definitely something crazy about the steering. At highway speeds trying to keep it straight is difficult. When you try to make a small correction it over shoots and then you need to correct again this seems to go back and forth, when some wind is present even more difficult. I am concerned for my wife's safety driving this car. How the same model car can have such different steering characteristics from 2011 to 2014 makes me think some defect is present, I have not contacted a local KIA dealer yet for service, but will as soon as I can.

Update from Jul 24, 2014: Took the vehicle in for service at the local KIA dealership 7-24-2014 The sevice technician road tested the vehicle and reported steering seems over sensitive and jerky, diagnosis steering and suspension. Cause Alignment out of spec. action Wheel alignment (4 wheels). Tech Verified alignment out of spec and adjusted to KIA specifications. also found tire pressure low and set to spec. The service department provided a print out of the initial settings with colums detailing the factory specifications and final settings, looking at the initial settings, numbers in ( ) are specifications

Front camber (-1.0 to 0.0),Left 2.1 Right -2.9 Toe (0.00 to 0.20), Left 3.40 Right 4.05 Total (-0.05 to 0.35) 7.45

Rear Camber Left (0.00 to 0.20) 19.5 right -19.1 Toe (0.00 to 0.20) Right & left 4.00 total (-0.05 to 0.35)8.00

comparing these values to the specifications they were way off. We will drive the car for a while and report back, my initial impressions it has improved.
