This is a very usual problem in Mexico. The trunk lock just stops working. In my case it continued working but the system didn't detect when it was or wasn't. So the light advice was not turning on, and the light in the trunk didn't turn on as well. If, for some reason, the trunk opened while driving, I would not have noticed it unless I saw the mirror.
