Sedona E 3.3L V6

Never had any indication that there was something wrong. We are the only owner of the van, all the oil changes services etc done. The car engine just quit. No lights to suggest that there was a problem.

Had it towed to the shop where they said the oil was 4q low. I had just had it serviced topped off 6 weeks / 3k miles earlier and now we are low on oil by 4qts?! It’s never blown through oil like that. It may be a quart down by the oil change time but never that much. And the oil light never came on, the engine light never came on until it actually stopped. But it doesn’t stay on just like there is nothing wrong. The mechanic says there is metal in the oil and we need a new engine. Well why has Kia recalled other cars with this same engine 3.3L GDI but not the Sedona?? What the heck is going on Kia- ??

I’ve seen this same complaint anywhere from 53k miles up to the 140s k miles. It’s obviously a problem.

I’ve spoken to a master Kia mechanic and he said so many of these engines have been recalled there is a 2 yr waiting list and to rebuild it the parts are hard to come by because of all these recalls but no recall for the Sedona Mini Van with the exactly same engine.

I am contacting the Kia manufacturer in the next day or so to see what if anything they are going to do. This should be covered in their recall since it’s the same engine.

Sedona LX 3.3L

I have a 2017 Kia Sedona LX with only 86,000 kms (53,000 miles). We are the only owner, and the service maintenance was done as specified at the Kia dealership, so they are well aware the car was well maintained.

While driving in the highway the engine started a loud banging sound. No dashboard lights ever turned on. The car was towed to Kia dealership and the estimate for repair is 12,000 CAD (9,000 USD). Basically, the car needs a new engine due to connecting rod failure. We have been in discussion with the Kia dealership and Kia Canada and they confirmed they will not cover the repair as the warranty is finished (5 years or 100,000 kms).

Incredible how they can get away with this! It seems to be the same issue as the smaller engines, but not covered on the bigger ones (3.3L).

I live in Canada and have filed the issue with Transport Canada, but I do not know what else I can do. Any other ideas of next steps? As you are aware the cost of the repair is extremely high, and the next engine might have the same issue.

Sedona EX 3.3L V6

I was driving my 2017 Sedona, just paid off in February, with 135,000 miles on it, on the way to work, and without any warning it made a knocking sound, the engine and oil lights turned on, and then it completely died. I was in traffic, so it rolled to a stop and then proceeded to cause a traffic jam. I had to be pushed out of the way and then it would not start. I had it towed to the local Kia dealer. After inspection, I was told it needed a new long block due to 'engine seizure'. I was quoted nearly $11,000 parts and labor for this repair. I was also told that it seems like this is 'just a thing these engines do". Now I have no car, and my options are to pay to replace the engine that just blew up with another just like it (which could blow up again) or to get another vehicle. I have no recourse and nothing to show for anything.
