It's actually happened three times, and I've had it repaired three times. Problem is the KIA is in my driveway because I'm afraid to drive it for fear it'll happen a fourth time. It's ridiculous that this hasn't been addressed as it causes loss of power steering and so far, by the grace of God, no one has been killed or injured as a result. It's sad to think that someone will have to die for this problem to be addressed.

Driving on a high speed road during end of day traffic, my girlfriend was almost hit by several vehicles trying to avoid her vehicle when the harmonic balancing pulley bolt sheered off and loosened the pulley from its crankshaft connection. She lost the ability to accelerate and was decreasing her momentum due to this catastrophic event. This has happened to several others with issues that were severely dangerous including loss of steering control.
We reported this to NHSTA last Tuesday. Kia refused to help or take responsibility for the problem even though it's a known defect. When I finally got the issue elevated to a manager at Kia corporate, he said we didn't qualify for covered repair because no one was killed or injured, and didn't own a second Kia. Those were the "qualifications".... Instead of getting reported for helping a Kia owner and getting a possible return customer, they opt to weasel out of their respective responsibility and back their product. Shameful corporate response. Next step is to report this to the federal trade commission and attorney general per the government organization NHSTA.

Can't give you the vin #... The car is 7 hours away. Brake light followed by battery and check engine light. All happened in about 10 seconds. Car towed to Tires Plus in Moorhead MN who tells me a pulley came off and something sheared into the engine. Over $7000 to fix. BUT to contact Kia because this has happened before. I wasn't the first one they had seen. It's now across the street from Tires Plus at Muscketell (sp?) who fixes Kias. They have had it since last Wednesday....today is Sunday....and still no contact with me about fixing. Was told the warranty on it was over 2000 miles earlier.
Why is there not more information about this on here? We have a local garage here with the same Kia and I stopped to ask about it...same year, same model, same problem. Electrical issues with burnt out bulbs, mother boards for the heat, air conditioning replaced. New tires every 15 months or so because it felt like I was blowing around the highway....just NOT one of the best cars I've owned.

My 2005 Kia Sorento, purchased in July 2014, broke down in August due to the crank gear sprocket pin breaking off, which caused the belts to quit turning and the power steering to lock up and the harmonic balancer to fall off. On the second occasion the same thing happened, this time fortunately I was able to stop immediately had it towed to a Kia dealership and they say I need the engine replaced at a cost of $5000.00. Contacted Kia Motors about this defect and they were no help.

Had time belt and CRANK BOLT changed on 11/3/17 at 203665 miles due having the vehicle tuneup and had work done in the area that the time belt was in. To avoid extra repair bill in 50000 miles. This was the 4th time timing belt has been changed; 73074 miles, 148204 miles, 181638 miles (Crankshaft pulley broken and had to be replaced), and now at 203655 miles. Current miles on KIA is approximate 205500 miles.
When bolt broke was under power at 40 miles a hour after having it towed to my mechanic shop who did not start work on it until 3 weeks ago due to being backed up had no problem with that, started on it then had to stop and send picture to locate KIA dealership where parts were got. The dealership in-turn had to contact KIA rep (back and forth). Mechanic told me that he thought the values were going to be messed up so after checking found out values were messed up so heads were removed. Guess what was found when head was removed a value had gone though one on the pistons(picture attached). So back to pictures being supplies to dealership who in-turn supplies to KIA rep. Was informed on 3/7/18 that KIA is not going to do anything about replacing engine or helping out due to faulty CRANK BOLT(picture attached), so for $8.88(amount charged to me on last invoice) which has caused a working engine to no longer be of any use.
WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY A KIA AND WILL INFORM ALL MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS IF THEY HAVE A KIA THINK REAL FAST ABOUT GETTING RID OF IT OF STAYING AWAY OF KIA. If anyone know of any lawsuit pending against KIA for faulty parts please contact me.
Update from May 30, 2018: KIA finally got a response from KIA Motors America, because I did not have the vehicle serviced at the local KIA dealership and all the work done on the vehicle had been done by 3rd party nothing was going to be done. The problem is the parts were got at KIA dealership so no after market product was used.
