The gasoline smell is intermittent and is strong at times. The dealer repair order states:" Story: 19914 check engine management system w/kds for codes. Found no codes set & updated software installed."
Obviously they only took the angle that the computer system would give them the answer, instead of actually looking for a problem under the hood. I still smell gasoline on occasion. After reading about the engine fires on this website I would think they would take the problem more seriously. There is no certain time that the problem presents itself.
I live in the Phoenix area, so it's relatively flat and I have not been in the mountains with the car. The weather is still in the 70's and 80's in October. The gas cap was secure at one click. The car was not over filled with gasoline. All questions that were asked by the service advisor. I do not normally drive the car hard. However, given the area highways there are times you have no choice but to accelerate hard. My Soul has a 1.6 L six speed automatic and accelerates pretty well without the need for full throttle acceleration.
Update from Mar 18, 2019: Traffic was terrible yesterday and there were times that I had to fully accelerate as I was merging on to the highway and to change lanes to get off the highway. When I entered the surface streets the gasoline smell was strong enough that I considered stopping the car. I would have, but I was nearly home. Poor excuse, I really should have stopped, especially knowing about the engine fires.
