Sportage LX 4 cyl 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 157,000 miles

Our 2013 Kia Sportage began making a knocking sound. We were told not to drive it due to this issue. We had it towed to the dealership where we bought it 7 years ago. We found out there was a recall, that we never were contacted about in 2017. The recall was due to “machining errors during the engine manufacturing process. It continues that it may cause premature bearing wear within the engine. After the dealership checked our vehicle they confirmed we had bearing material come apart internally, thus they would have to replace the engine. They told us that it would cost us over $13,000 to repair.

I recently checked the value of our car and it was closer to $5000 at the most $6000. But nowhere near the repair cost. We are extremely frustrated, due to not being notified that our car needed this recall so we wouldn’t basically lose a vehicle that we paid off. To add insult to injury they also let us know due to our mileage being over the extended warranty we would have to pay the 13k if we wanted them to fix it. I pointed out the recall I found was in 2017 way before our warranty expired.

We ended up contacting our local B.A.R. (Bureau of Automotive Repair) and after he looked into it, he told us technically its not a recall, but that he agreed due to all the complaints it should be taken care of. So not sure how I found the same recall everyone on here has found on Sportages between 2011 - 2013, yet mysteriously my car and all of those on here were not in that group. So not sure how a "recall" that has the exact same issues we have, isn't on our vehicle. So we are going to small claims and praying we get at least what are car would sell for if the engine wasn't shot. Because the cost of a rebuilt engine being installed is closer to a little more than the car is worth. I will never buy a Kia again, thats for sure. Even if they turned their company around.

Sportage LX 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,500 miles

I am having the same problem as many others that have been mentioned.

I was driving home about 1/2 hr away and started hearing a knocking sound in my vehicle. I told my local mechanic and when he listened, he stated that it was my engine and the rocker arm, from just listening to it. I took it to another mechanic and he stated that this should be covered under recall and to take it to the dealer.

I took it there and dropped off the vehicle because the noise was getting louder every time I used the gas pedal. They had it for 1.5 weeks before they looked at it, then she called and said I needed a new engine. There were no recalls and my vehicle was out of warranty. She offered me a price and I explained that I believed that since there were so many other vehicles having the same issue It should be a recall. She kept saying that it wasn't and did I want the price. I have a vehicle that has never had an issue until this and it can be repaired but the vehicle isn't worth the price of the repair. I am being told my numerous people to trade it in. I've only had it for 5 years.
