This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Kia dealer.
On January 10th, 2019 we drove the vehicle into the dealership in limp mode. The warning light was flashing engine problem. The dealership said on that day that Kia has approved replacement of this engine due to the severity of the problem and it shouldn't be driven. (note- when the Sportage was taken in for service on 9/2/2018, they did a service recall for the turbo boost line)
On January 23, 2019 I was called by Kia and was told the new engine was being made and should be available in a few weeks.
Was contacted by the dealership on 2/13/2019 and told that the new engine would be here around March 25th.
On February 20th, I was called by Kia and was told the new engine was delayed, and they thought it would be available on or around March 25th.
On 4/3/19, I visited the dealership and was told that the engine was delayed again and may be available around the end of April.
On April 8th, 2019 I was contacted by the dealership and told that the problem has been fixed. Kia said that the problem was a wiring harness and this has been replaced and driven two times to make sure the problem was solved. No new engine.
I contacted Kia Consumer Relations on 4/9/19 to report the situation and my issues with the following issues: 1) 4 months of time the dealership had the car to fix the situation 2) the car sat outside for 4 months without stabilizer in the gas and may have been started only a few times during the time it was immobilized. 3) How Kia switched from engine replacement to a new wiring harness to fix the issue. I stated this analogy, that if the doctor said I needed a new heart, and then 4 months later said, take this pill you are well again, with no explanation of what was the real issue and why we have a full recovery with this simple fix, just doesn't sit well with me. 4) concern over why at first Kia Corporate couldn't find the Vin number in their records for my vehicle, then how it was discovered after pressing them with the issue.
I am being told that the issue has been escalated and that the Regional Office will be contacting me.
I will be back to update everyone about this issue when I have more news. I have a 2014 Kia Cadenza that I have had no issues with. Disappointed that we are having issues with this vehicle.
Update from May 23, 2019: On April 26th 2019, I picked up my car. Kia replaced a wiring harness that corrected the situation and prevented the sensor from going off needlessly. The problem had been solved and we are again enjoying our Kia.
