About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I checked the car for a pre trip inspection, and noticed the oil dipstick smelled of gas. Towed it to a service center where they were not able to confirm what was the cause as there are no warning lights and fuel injectors tested good. They drained and flushed oil, but the issue did not resolve. Concerned this issue is the same issue as other cars of the same model but different year have been recalled for, I am reporting the issue.

I experienced three incidents attributable to a malfunction of the turbocharger integrated exhaust manifold. The first two occasions the vehicle suddenly and inexplicably lost power slowing to approximately 5 mph. Acceleration only made the engine rev up but did not increase power. No prior indications from the function of engine nor any warning indicators activated at the time the first two incidents occurred. I had only owned the vehicle for two to three months when the first incident occurred. Being my first experience with a vehicle equipped with paddles affixed to the steering wheel and not having any prior warnings I presumed I had inadvertently and incorrectly touched the paddles. The loss of power lasted only minutes but rendered the vehicle unable to maintain speed to safely maneuver through and move from travel lanes. The most recent occurrence happened while traveling at highway speed on an interstate. This time the vehicle again immediately lost power and my speed abruptly dropped to about 30 mph and for the first time illuminated the check engine light. Fortunately, traffic was light and I was within 1 mile of the next exit. I was able to maneuver to the shoulder and eventually exited the highway. The vehicle recovered function and I travelled approximately 10 miles back to a Land Rover Dealership. Diagnostic tests pulled code DTC P0299 and recommended that the turbocharger be replaced. There is currently a class action lawsuit pending against Land Rover vehicles for this problem which has been reported to be a common occurrence in the 2012-2017 Evoque, 2015-2017 Discovery Sport, and 2013-2015 LR2. In 2020 4 complaints were filed with NHTSA (11342410, 11342277, 11375748, and 11375786) regarding turbocharger failure and sudden loss of power. My vehicle has been parked at a dealership since July 8, 2021 because the unforeseeable loss of power renders the vehicle unreliable and at risk of accident and injury.

Crankshaft pulley fell off vehicle Belt of vehicle was no longer spinning and coolant/charging systems were not functioning properly Unknown Unknown

In July 2019 the 2016 Land Rover Discovery sport experienced a failure of the crank shaft pulley that completely destroyed the engine. At time of failure in 2019 car has approximately 96,500 miles. A claim was filed with Land Rover which was denied because they deemed the crank pulley a serviceable part that should have been maintained by car owner. The engine was subsequently replaced with used engine assembly with 60k miles and car placed back into service. January 2022 the same car experienced a crank pully failure on the engine that was replaced in July 2019. Car currently at Land Rover Dealership undergoing forensic evaluation.

The emissions light came on while driving in town. Upon diagnostic testing, it was the turbo charger that went out. Computer read out was "turbo boost building up pressure". the mileage was at 47,000 miles only. I had to replace it and replacement was $4825 new or $3661 for remanufactured. This is something that has to be replaced or would further damage the engine. The printout on my receipt read "cracked exhaust manifold (turbo), internal fault solenoid replaced turbo/charger/exhaust manifold. Replaced wastegate solenoid."

The turbo charger in my 2016 lr Discovery sport is bad and now needs replaced, otherwise there is minimal acceleration (acceleration worse than of a small compact 4-cylinder car). It is also very noisy due to the broken part. It only has 60K miles on it. Learned from a respected auto body shop that services high end vehicles this is a very common problem.

The contact owned a 2016 Land Rover Discovery sport. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled in traffic and the transmission warning indicator illuminated with a beeping noise. When the vehicle was powered off and restarted, it was able to drive normally. The vehicle was later taken to Jaguar Land Rover West chester (1568 West chester pike, West chester, pa, (610) 436-0600) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the transmission twice. On another occasion, the steering wheel seized while driving and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact crashed into an electric pole. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

Pulled into parking spot. Put car in reverse. Pressed gas. Car jumped forward at a fast speed. Rolled over curb and through fence. Hit brake. Stopped an inch before going down a 5 foot drop.

Twice now, I have come out of the auto start/stop mode after being idle. The engine seems to lag on engaging and both times my steering has been lost. Both times, my speed was not more than 5 mph and it took a few seconds for the car's steering to return. Once I was turning at a light after being stopped and once it was at a drive thru. It has been to the dealer once and they said they fixed the problem, but it will be on it's way again.
