Freelander broke down twice within a few weeks of each other. First time vehicle broke down took it to local dealer where purchased. Owner stated that mechanic did some "cleaning" and charged the battery. Second time had vehicle towed to Land Rover dealership and as soon as the tow truck dropped off the vehicle, service manager came and opened the hood of vehicle and asked me if I had put any coolant in lately. I told him just a little when my daughter first bought the Freelander, then he and one of his mechanics took off the hose going to the air filter and told me to look in side of the hose, to my surprise, there was a small puddle of coolant in the hose where air only is suppose to be. The service manager said this is typical of Freelanders due to way engines were made. With aluminum blocks instead of cast iron blocks. These aluminum blocks have sleeves inserted into each cylinder and after so many miles, the sleeves begin to move alittle, but just enough to let coolant seep into the part of the engine where air only goes causing the spark plugs to become fouled out and not let the engine start....I was also told by service manager, there is no fix as getting another engine will eventually do the same thing....so my daughter has a very nice looking vehicle with a defected engine, that she'll never drive again...
