About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I owned a 2002 land over Freelander, since 2006. It has been having engine problem 12 months after purchasing. I have contacted and interviewed other consumers with the same vehicle and issues. When I contacted Land Rover, they refused to do anything about it. The engine first over heats, it then has a cackling sound in the head, the service engine sign is always on. When I take it to the dealers for diagnostics, one employee said that these model vehicles come in for this problem very often. The vehicle was estimated to cost me over $5,000 to repair. This was not feasible being that there was a $70,000 payment left on the car. I had to turn it in to the bank but still stuck with a payment on a car that I can't even drive and was manufacturer's and dealers defect.

At 48,000 miles, I'm being told I have to replace the engine since coolant is leaking into the oil. This is the latest in a long line of problems with this vehicle. On my 2002 Freelander

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 Land Rover Freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and I needed a new engine. My car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded. I am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this SUV. Land Rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done.
