About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Driving 75mph on interstate, while passing semi trailer, suddenly a loud thump and loss of drive to wheels, lost of power and sudden lost up hill I lost control of vehicle. Semi avoided me, and I was barely able to control body roll but safely brought vehicle to stop of the side of road. Towed to my mechanic, he reported that differential along with prop shaft had failed. He believed this was a recall issue. Dealer in Santa Fe, nm says no active recall. I have read otherwise and that the issue can occur even after initial recall work done.

Bought this vehicle for wife brand new for $80,000. First 38,000 miles best car ever owned. Then the landslide began. First bad vibration front end we pay $1,300 for wheel bearings. The transmission cooler rusted out. Our fault salty roads $1,100 next the radiator goes $1,800 on us. By now 72,000 miles on it. Keep in mind my wife only uses to goto grocery store and pick kids up from school. God forbid we ever took it off road or thru the plains of africa. Now the biggy starts engine surging for no reason, vibration in steering wheel. Yes tires are new and balanced. Then the notorious transmission failsafe. Limpmode. Safety mode. How about sucker mode. Take it to dealer and they say need new transmission. I freak and second mechanic there looks at it and said its the transfer case motor $3,100. Oh yea that would be on us as well. So I say I'll tell you what put it in writing, that for sure this is the problem and if fixed all my transmission problems go away and if they don't its on you guys until its fixed. Yes you know what they said. I mean what happened to honesty and integrity. Love your neighbor as yourself. Stand by your work. Look I knew going into this car it was high maintenance but it does not even have 100,000 miles on it. Never fixed. Somedays it acts up all day other times once or twice it limps very sporadic. Pretty much a weatherby car. Whether or not it will act up or not. Ashamed to sell it and give someone else the problems. Tried telling people about problems and they said they would give me $7,000 carmax would not touch it actually refused to appraises it even though it was the cleanest they have seen. Issue the auction had a lemon flag on all the rangerovers with 70,000 miles or more. Nice!

Took my 2004 rr to dealer for front differential recall, having no prior issues. Left the dealer and within 20 minutes had a failure at highway speeds in miami, in rush hour traffic!! cpu on vehicle said "put vehicle in neutral" which I did and luckily coasted to the side of the freeway stranded. Thank goodness I wasn't seriously injured. Had it towed to the dealer and same issue within 70 miles of driving, dealer seems to be "dumbfounded" to the symptoms.

A stop light was turning "green" so I step on the gas peddle, the vehicle at that time stopped abruptly and was making a grinding noise. When I step on the gas, it doesn't do anything but making a louder grinding sound. At that time, I see an error message that reads "remove gear of neutral". I did not receive any warning message or any funny noise leading to this. This has never happen before. I had my car towed to a independent garage, since the landrover does not take any responsibility or accountability on the false design of this vehicle. I found out later it was an on going issue with the front differential, which the dealership trying to say it was an "wear and tear" issue and they were going to charge me $1,800 to fix. I will never purchase anything from landrover or whoever the parent company is.
