About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
I am the owner of a 2006 Lexus GX470 (VIN [xxx]). a month or so ago, at or about 56,500 miles, the check engine light came on along with about three other yellow warning lights. Also, the engine went into a mode that barely allowed me to drive down the road. On or about January 27 of this year, I limped to the Lexus dealer for inspection. As the attached report indicates, my vehicle was diagnosed with a failure of the secondary air system with a repair estimate of $2,114.60. (see page 9 of the attached autopoint fitness inspection & treatment plan). After research, it appears that this problem is very common with this engine type. I would assert that mine is a defective vehicle. It seems the secondary air pump (part of the emissions system) is defective and deteriorates, causing the entire system to stop working. This then causes the engine control system to reduce the engine to a "limp mode" that is dangerous and dysfunctional.
