I purchased a 2009 Lincoln MKS AWD from Carmax on May 1st. with 29000 miles has all the bells and whistles. Got home from Car Max and parked it in the garage. The next morning I noticed red fluid on the garage floor about the 10-14 inches around.

I took the car back to CarMax and they inspected the car and found the right PTU unit was bad. They could not fix it so they took it to the local Ford dealer since it still under factory warranty.

What is troubling is the car has 29000 miles and apparently the AWD Fords and Lincoln's have the problem fairly common due to the AWD based on what I have read. I did some research and the service bulletin from Ford states that the PTU units were cross threaded in the factory and around 20000 to 30000 miles they will began to leak fluid. The entire unit has to be replaced. This is common on the AWD Focus, Edge; all the Lincoln's except the Town Car from 2007-2010.

Another thing is that Carmax was to have done a 120 point inspection but yet they missed this huge problem. I have to wonder if they missed the other 119 points of inspection. The service technician told me since the car was not due for a routine maintenance inspection based on the factory guidelines they did not do one on the engine and transmission but yet they changed the oil which means they had to put the car on a lift to change the oil but totally missed the fluid leaking from the area right next to the oil pan.

I am a GM guy and took a chance on this car since it is a really nice car and purchased it for my wife. I have a 5 days return with no questions asked 'option' and Car max will repair any defect for the first 30 days after that but at this point when I get the car back I am not sure I still want it. This is all a bad omen for me. If I have one single issue with the car in the next 5 days back it goes.

How could Lincoln get it so wrong? If they knew this was an issue why didn’t they recall the cars and fix the problem instead of waiting for the problem to happen. Beware of this problem if you buy on of the AWD Ford cars especially if they are out of warranty. You will have to pay big bucks to get it repaired.
