About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Power side step bars rotten with rust, we can no longer step on them because they will break off completely then we will have a bigger problem.

My 03 Lincoln Navigator has been having problems with the power running boards on the driver side. After car is started the running board remains deployed and will not return to the "in" position until vehicle has exceeded more than 5mph. The running board will go in and out every time the vehicle comes to a stop. The problems temps to be worst on hot days. I have not done anything to fix the problem yet, but after researching and reading some blogs about Lincoln's 03 Navigator I saw that there is a lot of other Navigator owners that are or had experienced the same problem. When the running board does not go in, it makes the air suspension not inflate as it should. This makes the vehicle feel like if it is heavier than it is and at time making it hard to handle on the road. With this I have noticed that since the suspension is not running ok the car feels like if its dragging, which puts extra stress on the tires, wearing out the tires faster than it should.

The retractable power running boards on my 2003 Lincoln Navigator intermittently fail to deploy and/or retract. As a result of the failure to deploy, I fell while exiting the vehicle, hitting my head on the ground, injuring my lower back (lumbar)in two places and fracturing my (thoracic) spine at T-12. I've researched this on line and found several others vehicle owners who have the same problem with the running boards. I'm told that Ford has a service bulletin #17249 that describes the malfunction. Ford and the dealer have been unable or unwilling to repair my vehicle. I have left it with the dealer for repairs numerous times, twice one of the running boards was stuck in the outer position at the time it was left for repair. I have met with the factory engineer on two occasions. I have made numerous complaints and telphone calls to the Lincoln customer servicehotline and met with smithtown Lincoln Mercury's previous and current service managers. A dangerous condition exists. Hopefully you will take an interest and force them to take whatever action is required to correct the malfunction before others also sustain serious injuries.

Dealership replaced the motor and the computer of driver's seat that was too loose and moved back and forth while driving, causing a distraction to the consumer. 6 months later, consumer experienced the same problem. The vehicles brakes squeaked, the door panel was loose, the side mirror motor failed. There was a rattling noise coming from the rear center console and there was a loud humming noise from the passenger dash in cold weather. The gear shifter broke while driving. The original windshield wiper left a black smear on the window when it rained which made it difficult to see. The front door molding warped. The consumer no longer wasn't the vehicle and has requested a refund.

The driver had a hard time reading the dashboard panel. The dealer was aware of the problem. The lights on the dash were too dim to read in bright sunlight and visible in the shade. This problem caused the consumer to miss the "door ajar/tailgate" for thirty minutes which allowed exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle.
