The transmission on my 1995 Mazda 626 died after approx 75K miles. There are no replacements anywhere in the country. I will have to have the current transmission rebuilt for approx $3K or sell the vehicle for parts. That is ridiculous for such a low-mileage vehicle to be in such a situation. Researching the issue online I see this is a very common problem for the 1995 Mazda 626. I see mention of the transmission possibly requiring a transmission cooler, suggesting that the failure occurs because the fluid overheats. Not sure if that is the case, but clearly something in the design has resulted in an unreasonably short lifespan for the tranny. It is not reasonable for the consumer to take this on the chin. Mazda needs to be held accountable and bear at least some of the pain their flawed design has caused. Please contact me for additional details as needed. Thank you for your consideration.

My 1995 Mazda 626 has major transmission failure. After I got it fixed, it still had the same problem but I crashed before I had a chance to take it back and use the warranty. I have heard that this is a major problem with many 626 Mazda made between 95' and 00'.

I am now on my third transmission since I bought my 1996 Mazda 626 dx, 4 cyl. The first transmission was under warranty. The second failure was in Nov 2005. I took vehicle to non-dealer source. The transmission started acting up again last week. After about 40 miles shifting gets hard after a stop. Vehicle will down shift when you take foot off the gas. Right now the repair shop is trying to trouble shoot without finding the problem.

I own a 1995 Mazda 626 - and every now and then the "od off" light will flash continuously for months....I have changed the belts, water pumps, fan belts, transmission fluid gaskets and even the battery three times. Recently the dealer advised me to change the transmission since it was leaking to the point of no repair. We changed the transmission and after two days of driving the car jerks when taking off, the od off light is flashing again, and the it appears to be overheating - but the dealer says there is no problem with the radiator. This has been going on forever with the Mazda - how many times can one change parts about every six months?...Mazda should have recalled this model years ago - there is a fault in its transmission or computer system.

626 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 112,000 miles
I currently have approx. 112,000 miles on my car. I do not drive it a whole lot but during a trip from Maryland to Florida, my transmission started to go up. The O/D light started flashing, the RPM and mileage needle was going wacky and the car would barely drive. The mileage needle would say that I was doing 0 mph when in fact I was driving at 20 mph. I had to drive on gear 1 or 2 half the way back. There was also this burnt smell coming from the transmission oil. Which scared me because I thought the car was surely going to catch on fire since I was only in Virginia (again, final destination Florida) now I take care of my car, I had just had the transmission fluid flushed two months before. Prior to this incident, during daily operation, whenever I would shift gears on my car, the response was always delayed about 1 second and a half, which I have been told are clear signs of impeding transmission failure. I also found out from several other Mazda 626 owners that these Mazda vehicles are well known for transmissions failures. Due to the fact of poor ventilation for the trans, this causes too much heat that leads to trans. Failure. I feel that this is the manufacturers fault for letting a faulty engineer as this one go to the market. What if someone gets hurt? no I have to front the bill for a transmission that was doomed to fail and I do not think that is right. Mazda should pay, not me.

My 1995 Mazda 626 LX has had its overdrive off light blinking for a month now I have had it checked. It would only blink when the gas would get below a half of a tank. So I had the fuel filter replaced. Then it started to shift gears at random times. I had the usual done, flushed the transmission replaced filter etc. Its a week later my transmission has completely failed. Due to my transmission overheating. I did some research and found that I was not the only one with this same issue and that thousands of people have identical situations. The car has had regular maintenance and has a clear record. Its 11 years old with only 80,000 miles. The drive load has been minimal, no more that 10 miles a day. I shouldn't have to be putting in a new transmission and neither should all these other people.

626 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles
I own a 1995, Mazda, 626, 4 cylinder, automatic, LX model car. Purchased the car in 1996 with 15000 miles on it and started having transmission trouble @ about 40000 miles. Contact Mazda and had dealer look at the car before the warranty expired due to un-normal transmission activity and the end results were the car/transmission was ok. Continued to drive car and problem got worst. (erratic shifting, blinking od light, jumping in and out of gear at any known time) the transmission eventually went out on the road. Luckily nobody was hurt. That transmission was changed out (expenses paid by me the owner, the car was out of commission for about 10 days) and replaced with a second transmission not knowing there was any known transmission trouble from/with Mazda or Ford. The same sequence of events start happening with the second transmission; even down the transmission going out on the road (and still lucky it did not go out in the middle of an busy intersection with lots of traffic/ long distance trucks coming). In both situations the fluid was changed and the warranty had just expired giving no help.

626 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 89,000 miles
I bought a used Mazda 626 (1995) in December 2003 and it had about 85,000 miles when I purchased it. Within 6 months of purchasing the vehicle the transmission went bad (the gear teeth broke and the entire transmission had to be tossed). A new transmission was fitted in its place and this cost me about $2,500. A few weeks later I learnt that this was a problem found in many Mazda 626 models manufactured in 1995. I mainly use this vehicle to drive to school and do some grocery; hardly do I take it on the interstate or drive at high speeds. After about two years it is still giving me other problems - like engine wont crank and so on. I am disappointed buying this vehicle and will never ever buy a Mazda/Ford product.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 184,950 miles
I just recently purchased a used 95 Mazda 626. After two days of having the vehicle the O/D light will flash off and on and will shift very hard from first gear to second. I have now taken it to 3 different mechanics at my own expense and have been told several different answers. I am now looking at either having a new transmission put into the car or just replacing the solenoids that could be causing the light to go off and on. A total cost of around $2300, not to mention I am still making payments on the car. The car is scheduled to start repairs on Monday. Only having the car for 4 days and am experiencing all these problems, this car has been my worst nightmare!.

Transmission failed. Jerky or no reaction when placing into gear. The car, while in an intersection, acted like it was out of gear. Then, suddenly, it jerked into gear. The transmission seemed like it regained normalcy when I slowed down and it seemed to disengage from the engine. I coasted to a stop. The vehicle is a 1995 Mazda 626 and has 86588 miles.
