626 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,000 miles
1995 Mazda 626 purchased used in 1998 with appx. 30,000 miles at time of purchase. Vehicle currently has 40,000 miles and the transmission has totally burned out. Took vehicle to dealer in July 2005. I was informed that I needed a new transmission. I asked why would a vehicle with only 40,000 miles need a new transmission. Car was only driven on weekends for short trip. In the 7 years that I've had the vehicle it was only driver 10,000 miles. I paid over 18,000 for a vehicle that gets only 10,000 miles" or 40,000 total" asked Mazda to pick up the cost of repair which is $4,000 as this is as recurring problem with certain of their model vehicles due to the installation of a Ford transmission in these makes//modesl. Mazda has advised that my warranty period has expired. I stated that it's not a warranty problem but a defective transmission problem. The car has now been at the dealer for 3 months. Dealer has not contacted me except once to pick up the vehicle. I, of course, cannot pick up the vehicle as it cannot be driven without a transmission and I don't have $4,000 to pay for a new one. I continue to carry insurance on a car that cannot be driven. Additional internet research has revealed that Mazda owners all over the country are complaining about these bad transmissions that are burning out prematurely with as little as 25,000 miles on the vehicle. Mazda refuses to acknowledge or correct the problem.

This Mazda is on 3rd transmission and this one has gone bad. Dealer is not willing to do anything since its not under warranty. Contacted manufacturer, they said nothing they can do. This started on August 19, 2005. When at a stop the vehicle was in drive tried to accelerate and it would not do anything for a few seconds then it would surge forward. Then, when at a stop the vehicle would vibrate violently and the driver had quit all together.

I am experiencing the infamous Mazda 626 transmissioin failure which is an extreme hazard for myselt and my children. The O/D light blinks and as evidenced by the thousands of complaints I found on the web, the transmission is experiencing a meltdown. I was driving my two young children to school when the transmission caused the car to jerk uncontrollably and stop. This in my view has the potential of a catastrophic accident. The design flaw is obvious after reading so many similar accounts.

I have a 1995 Mazda 626 LX, while driving on the interstate my speedometer stopped working, the O/D off light started blinking and my transmission would not go past 2nd gear. These are the symptons of the recall on the 1994 Mazda 626, but there is no recall on the 1995.

I own a 1995 Mazda 626 4cyl, 4dr, automatic. The O/D light started flashing the other day and now my transmission will only shift into gear when it wants to. The car idles well, but while on the road for more than 10 mins (while the engine gets heated up), then the car looses power and jerks trying to get into a gear. After reading the issues online, am pretty sure that the transmission may have to be replaced or at least something fixed in it. Looking for some help...

The od off light began flashing in March or April of this year took it to the dealership I purchased it from, was told then that it was a bearing within the transmission that just wasnt moving they moved electronically and the light went out then approximately two weeks ago the overdrive off light began flashing again, I took it in and they say it is thr torque converter and probably a bushing inside the transmission that is causing a major vibration. My 1995 Mazda 626 has just over 77,000 miles on it and has the same transmission as the 94 which is known for its problems and by all reports most of those problems were not fixed until 96 now I am facing a secondary warranty company who may or may not approve my claim, my car occasionall stalls when I push the gas etc, many similar problems you can read on the web with this same car. If the warranty I purchased just for things like this does not cover this I am stuck with a bill I cannot afford, for a problem that is well known and well reported. This is a Mazda and for issue and should be resolved by them...it is not safe to have these cars on the road. My car is currently at bay Ford in portorchard Washington. Why should a car need a new transmission with such low mileage. Thank you for your time.

When driving the car while in "D", the car with cut off right in traffic without warning but if you drive it in the lower gears it won't cut off. Nothing have been done to correct the problem. The car is just sitting. My aunt was told it was the transmission failing. It's happened off and on but it's worst now.

I bought a 95 Mazda 626 4 cyl automatic transmission in 1998. Not long after I bought the car I had the typical 30/60/90 thousand mile service done. Replaced all belts, hoses, transmission fluid, timing belt, etc. It seemed as there was no warning when the transmission went out. We were driving back from the store and it started slipping between shifting of gears, and then it just locked up and almost caused an accident. I had to tow it in and had the transmission rebuilt. Every internal part was replaced for about $2500 I bought the extended three year warranty for it. About six months later my wife was on a trip with her friend and again with no warning the transmission started acting up. She had the car towed to aamco, which is where whe had the transmission rebuilt. The checked it out and found nothing wrong with the car. We got the car back and it seemed to be doing okay. About 6 months before the warranty ran out on the transmission we noticed it started slipping again, but not that bad. We took it in once again and aamco said there was nothing wrong. We have babied this car to make it last. Now about three-four weeks ago we noticed the transmission has started slipping again really bad. This report is two-fold, the first for Mazda who has known this is a bad transmission since 1993, and second for aamco who should've looked into the transmission better the last time we brought it in. If you type 1995 Mazda transmission into a search engine on the net, you will come up with many opinion sites with people complaining about this transmission. Everybody with a Mazda 626 and MX6 from 1993 to 2002. It seems the problem is that the transmission gets too hot. It also seems that Mazda knows this, yet they do not tell peoplehow to prevent the problem. In my best knowledge of the problem, if Mazda would rebuild all the transmissions, install a transmission cooler, and offer yearly fluid changes, no where near as many people would have this problem.
