Starter failed resulting in the vehicle starting to crank without a key in the ignition followed by smoke bellowing from the engine and around the wheel wells.

Vehicle takes too long to start, and one can hear the starter kicking or striking for about 20 seconds. But when turned on again, engine starts right away.
