Through searching the web I've found that literally hundreds, possibly thousands have had the same problem with the OD/OFF light coming on only to escalate into a failing transmission.

Had to move out of the country for work, transmission failed at 56,000 miles. We took it to a Mazda dealership and was told it would cost 6400.00 euros to have it fixed. We contacted the Mazda dealership where the vehicle was purchased and asked what they would charge for the same repair, they would not give us any advice and were very rude. Contacted the Customer Relations Office in Irvine, CA and basically received the same treatment.
