CX-5 Touting 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 41,600 miles

Purchased our CX5 used with 25,000 miles on the odometer. Ran well for about a year. We detected a burning odor in mid January and had it checked at a local shop. They spotted an oil leak at the back of the engine. They suggested checking with the dealership to see if it was under warranty. Mazda checked it out and found the same issue. They got authorization to cover the cylinder head replacement under the original warranty. They gave us a loaner for the 2 days that the work was being done. Very pleased with the response by Mazda.

CX-5 GT

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,600 miles

I drive a 2018 Mazda CX-5 GT with ONLY 30,600 miles on it. Engine started smoking while sitting in a drive through, and the smell was awful. I thought it was the vehicle in front of me. However, once that vehicle left, I realized it was MINE! So, I continued driving it to my office (I had no choice) in hopes that it would go away. I pulled into the parking lot & it was still smoking. I called the dealership & they asked me if I could bring it in. I decided to drive it around first before I dropped it off, worried that it wouldn't smoke again, only this time, it was worse. Smoke was pouring in through the A/C vents, so bad, I had to open my windows.

I dropped it off at the dealership & they gave me a loaner (thankfully). I called them later to see what the issue was & the service dept said that some of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 were having engine & cylinder head issues and there was a bad batch of engines for that year. Told me I either need a new engine or new cylinder heads, and they are waiting to hear back from the company on what to do. Said they will either want to replace the heads or the whole engine. Pretty sure they should replace the Whole engine! Had I gone over my 36,000 warranty, I would have been so pissed. I thank my lucky stars for that!! If Mazda has known about this issue, they should have placed a recall on this model. Pretty sure I won't be buying a Mazda again.
