I was driving straight, in no traffic, on a 40mph local road. My approximate speed was 40mph. There were no bumps in the road. The sunroof exploded. Luckily I had the sun shade closed so glass did not rain down on me.

When I got to a safe place and inspected the window I found that it had exploded upward from the center. I looks like some manufacturing defect in the glass or adhesive pushed the glass in toward the center and it shattered while heaving upward.

The temperature was 70 degrees. The sun had just set but it was light out. There was no rain or clouds.

The sunroof was not struck by anything.

Driving on the Verrazano bridge and I heard what sounded like a gunshot. I thought my tire exploded, but I realized that was not the case - and then I noticed glass all over the passenger seat. I looked around and saw my sunroof had a big whole in it and the rest was shattered. My initial thought was that something must have fell off the bridge, but there was nothing inside my car - except glass. It was also raining out.

I got home and went online and sure enough I am not the only one this has happened to. I called Mazda and they weren't any help - they said they may be able to get me $30 a day to rent a car if my insurance doesn't cover it. Big deal. Now I am waiting for a sunroof place to order the sunroof - and lord knows how long that's going to take.
