CX-5 S 2.5L

Bought my 2022 Mazda CX-5 in July 2025. Car was a 1-owner lease with only 18,500 miles at purchase at a Toyota dealer. Car passed their inspections and drove well on three test drives. Fast forward to November and the car makes a very irritating rattle/squeak noise coming from below the steering wheel area, around the steering column. I tried pressing on plastic, moving things around, checking for loose wires, wiring harnesses, bolts, nuts, screws, anything that could cause a rattle and found nothing. Took the car to a local Mazda dealer January 3rd who could not find the source of rattle, and after the fact diagnosed the issue as "Mazda TSB #06-001-24.

Some customers may complain about a creaking, knocking, rattle or clunk noise coming from the steering column while driving. A steering column nut loosens due to excessive load when driving on irregular roads. To eliminate this concern, the tightening torque for the steering column nut has been increased." After reaching out to Mazda corporate and seeing my car was outside the basic warranty 3 year/36k mile period they would not cover nor help in any way and closed the case. Thankfully I bought an aftermarket warranty who covered the repair (brand new steering column + labor). I was responsible for the $190 diagnostic fee so no big deal. Over a month later, I got the call saying car was repaired, no rattle, and ready for pick up. I pick up the car, and they did not solve the issue. Brought car back to the same dealer who had it for an additional two weeks and said car was fixed. Pick up car for the second time and the rattle still remains....

Got a second opinion at an alignment/suspension shop who couldn't locate the noise of the rattle either. Their diagnosis was it being an issue with the clock spring being improperly seated thus causing the rattle. The tech did say the clock spring itself is in fine working condition and mechanically sound, so the replacement of the clock spring may not fix the issue. I'm 0/3 in anyone being able to fix this persistent and annoying rattle.
