Based on the comments on this website, it looks like we are the latest to have a water pump fail, but ours is failing at 66,234 miles which looks early compared to others. We bought the car new, have had all maintenance done at Mazda, and this happened without any warning (leaks, warning lights) whatsoever.
Mazda recommends a new water pump and new engine (which will take 1.5 months to be built in Japan) for $12,500. I echo everything I've read from others. They didn't offer to look for a used engine.
This is unacceptable, I could have been in a serious accident, if they have known about this they should have had a recall a long time ago. I see a lawsuit has been filed.
