While parked in the lot of our local Target on a sunny afternoon (low 90's) the sunroof on our 2010 model CX-9 shattered for no apparent reason.
We had the store review the security camera recording and nobody approached the vehicle. There was no foreign object in the car, just a lot of glass fragments.
Of course our local Mazda dealer insists this is not a warranty claim but surely this implies a defect of some sort? Anyone else with a similar story?

The car was parked and secured in the garage after returning home from work. After I was in the house for 5 min. I heard a loud bang/explosion come from in the garage. When I went to investigate, I saw the sunroof of my Mazda CX-9 had exploded. Nothing fell on the car and broke the window. The sunroof had a hole about the size of two fists and the rest of the glass that was still in tact was domed up like it exploded from the inside. The shade was closed so no glass in the car. that's one good thing.
As I stood there taking pictures for the insurance company because I was sure they would never believe me, the glass continued to crackle and pop and small pieces even shot up into the air. Of course the Mazda dealership had NEVER heard of this happening. Not allowed to move the car until the insurance company looks at it to determine the cause. If its a manufacture defect I won't have to pay the deductible. We'll see
