Transfer case was leaking and overheating. Covered under extended warranty. This is a well known issue for this car. Would have cost $2K+ to repair outside of warranty according to dealer. Note that the replacement transfer case is identical to the original--meaning it will likely fail again prematurely (dealer implied as much too). Next time that happens, it will be on my dime. Very disappointing!
