This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Mazda dealer.
I purchased the car used at 48,000 miles in June 2018. February 11, 2019 engine died hours after check engine light came on. Didn't drive car more than 5-10 miles. Head Gasket failed, and coolant leaked into oil, pretty much burning up everything inside engine. Hoping it is covered under warranty, and I will update when I know the final cost of repair and time.
Update from Mar 12, 2019: 3/12/19 - Update, Mazda covered the new engine under the warranty. I was given a new "zero" mile engine from California. After new engine was put into vehicle another check engine code pulled, not more than 1/2 mile from dealer. This time it was code P0012. A third check engine code pulled about 30 miles in driving, this was the mass air flow sensor.
Total repair time 3-4 weeks. Dealer, All-American Mazda in Brick, NJ was the dealer/service center I brought the car to for repair. The service center was great. I was given a loaner car, and was treated very nice by the service center staff.
Initial issue: Check engine code P0016
Second: Check engine code P0012
Third: Check Engine, mass air flow sensor
About 300 miles after receiving car back it is running well.

I purchased my Mazda CX-9 last month on May 19 at 94,000 miles approximately and about 3 weeks later the water pump broke with no warning and caused my engine to fail. I was only at 96,000 approximately when this occurred. Didn’t even have the vehicle a month and just paid the insurance along with the payment of the vehicle. Warranty wouldn’t cover the engine so I’m stuck paying 1600 for the engine. They only going to cover the water pump.
