This is a known problem. The coating comes off the camshaft and distributes metal fragments throughout the engine and turbo. It is terminal and the car is not worth repairing (new engine £6,500, reconditioned engines may have the same problem).
It is a well known problem in UK, US, Australia and other countries affecting early CX5s from 2012-2014 with specific VIN numbers.
Mazda have had a programme for repair until warranty expires, and then goodwill payments which ceased in August 2020.
But they deny all knowledge of this and now accept no responsibility despite the previous program and goodwill payments (see Mazda Forum for details).
