Our 7 year old Mazda3 has been a great car for us & we were planning on shooting for another 4-5 years of use out of it & were expecting to get to the 250,000km mark on it before replacing. Unfortunately, last week, we noticed a tick from the engine between 2-3k rpm with light throttle. When it's cold, it's quiet, but when it warms up. Have had the car at three different shops - all of which have come back with the same diagnosis - connecting rod bearing failure, is a common problem. Cannot be fixed & are recommending replacing the engine with a re-manufactured one - all in, the best price i could find for this is $5,040 CAD - or, could go with a junk yard engine for about $1,000 less.
Hugely disappointed in this having happened way earlier than we think it should have and, very surprised about it being a failure that cannot be repaired.
