About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Transmission roughly jerks itself into 2nd-3rd gear. When the car has come to a stop and is then accelerated, engine stalls for a few seconds, then slams itself into 2nd or 3rd gear. This poses as a rear-end threat, as the car is forcefully put into gear, causing the car to jerk forward suddenly. For me this only occurs at lower speeds (10-30 mph). I have researched this problem and many others have come across the same thing.

The contact owns a 2006 Mazda 6. while driving various speeds, the clutch would shift automatically into neutral and the engine revved. After a few seconds, the gear would forcefully shift into any gear without warning. The failure occurred more often while on inclines or when the vehicle was in fourth, fifth, or sixth gear. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed, but the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was still under warranty at the time. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
- Big Oak Flat, CA, USA
The contact owns a 2006 Mazda 6. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate independently and the check engine indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. While depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not respond. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Driving on freeway at about 65 mph, all of a sudden the ABS light came on, seconds later the check engine light came on. About 30 seconds later, my Mazda6 shut off and I lost power steering. I got stuck in the middle of the freeway. Smoke was coming out of the left side (if standing in front of car) under the hood and radiator fluid was pouring out the bottom. Car wouldn't start, click click click, had to have it towed home. Had a independent mechanic look at the car, he said the engine was blown. * car gave zero indications that it was overheating, no change in the temperature gauge.** I think there is a defect somewhere in this area, as it should've told me it was overheating. I bought this car brand new in June 2006 and have babied it. This is the first and only problem I have ever had with it. I did not replace the engine.

When vehicle is turned off the engine cooling fan sounds like the car in still running...it revs up and back down and it keeps repeating this three or four times. I thought the hood was going to blow off but the temperature gauge inside the car does not say it is overheating. I believe this the result of a faulty cooling fan control module. This control module should really be recalled because it is probably causing other problems and it is kind of scary when your car in sitting in your garage turned off but keeps getting louder and louder.

TL * the contact owns a 2006 Mazda 6. while driving at an unknown speed in a parking lot, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The acceleration continued even after the hand brake was applied. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the side of a truck, tree, and transformer before finally crashing into a metal fence. The air bags failed to deploy. The police were called and the vehicle was towed. There were no injuries. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the manufacturer was not. The vehicle was not repaired. There were no injuries. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000. Updated 08/12/14

I noticed the cooling fan coming on every time I turn the car on and it doesn't turn off for several minutes after the car is turned off. The engine is running in the normal temperature range, so I don't think the fan should be running constantly. I took the car to my mechanic, who notified me of a recall by Mazda for the fan control module for the same production year and the same make/model. I reached out to Mazda, but they notified me my VIN didn't fall in the range of the recall. It seems odd that the same product would have the same issue in the same car but not be covered by the recall. I wanted to notify the NHTSA of the issue in hopes that Mazda would resolve the issue. Thanks.

At 75,000 and light driving, the car would 'clunk' hard when it slowed. The dealer took 3 hours and 500 dollars to fix an engine mount bolt. Also they said the check engine light was on. Two oxygen sensors are out and wanted a few hundred dollars more. Sadly disappointed in this lightly Mazda 6 V6 2006 car! the engine mount bolts would have been horrible if the engine fell in traffic.
