convertible top separated from cable around back window convertible top separated from cable around back window

This beautiful 2005 CLK 320 Convertible's top, because of the seam parting from a cable around the back window, is inoperable in that further use, up/down, will break the back window. The dealer, parts and labor, has quoted ~$7,200 to replace the top!

This is a manufacturer's defect in that many Mercedes convertibles that use this method of securing the back of the convertible top around a cable to the back window have failed to hold up. This CLK 320 convertible has only 58,079 miles.

Having written to Mercedes-Benz, Montvale, NJ, but to date have only received a return call to two over-night letters.

I can drive the car but can't use the top.
