I purchased a used 2000 Mercedes E320 on near the end of August 2004. Approximatly 45 days later I noticed a noise coming from the dashboard area when making a left or right turn at low speed. It could be described as a "rubber on rubber" squeaking noise. It has slowly gotten louder over the past few weeks. Searching the internet I have found that others have this same problem with their Mercedes around this year. Since I just bought the car, I suspect it could have been something that was "quieted down" by applying a lubricant. I have no way to prove that. Others who have had this problem on the internet claim the dealer replaced the steering rack to fix the problem. That would be a cost of approximatly $2000. This is appearing to be a common problem with Mercedes-Benz, possibly just a few models and years, and should be taken care of by them. The automobile I purchased came off the Mercedes lease program.
