Filled up my car with gas. Came home, parked it in the garage. Next morning noticed a very strong fuel order in garage. Took it to mechanic and said the fuel tank was cracked and leaking gas vapors. Scared me as my natural gas water heater is in the garage as well.

There's strong gasoline odor from my vehicle whenever I refuel, particular after it's garaged. The smell seems to go away once I used up 1/3 or 1/2 tank. Recently the smell seems to be stronger. I can smell it even when it's not garaged.

I own a 2004 E320 with only 44,652 miles. After every fill up strong order of gas from left side near back seat area also check engine light will always comes on. I took car to a mb mechanic trained by mb he removed the rear seat and left fuel sending unit cover, found a huge puddle of gas on and round gas tank pump area. I was told the pump seal was no good, I had the pump and seal replaced, filled tank again with the same result. Finally, last Friday, with the seat and sending unit cover off we filled the tank and drove the two miles back to the mechanic shop, when we arrived the whole area around the pump was full of fuel, upon inspection one could see the fuel running from the top of the fuel tank and puddle around base of the fuel pump. We video the fuel running from top of the fuel tank. Contacted local mb dealer where I purchased the vehicle but was told there is no warranty on vehicle. The dealer will inspect and repair the vehicle but the expense will be on me. I don't allow anyone in my family to drive this car because of this problem. This is very dangerous situation that needs to be address.

I noticed a strong gasoline smell inside the garage when the door is closed. I walked around the car trying to determine where it is coming from. The strongest gas smell is around the rear wheelwell on the drivers side. Three days later, the gas smell went away. Then I went to fill-up my gas tank after four days and there is the gasoline smell again inside the garage on the same location.

NHTSA action number: PE12001 began smelling fuel coming from rear driver's side area (under rear seat) once fuel tank was fully filled up. The smell would persist until a little above 3/4's of the tank remaining. About two months later, when trying to fill tank up all the way, gas pump would click off before filling up (with about 2 or 3 gallons still empty in the tank). Beginning of March, the check fuel cap warning would come on in the instrument cluster. Fuel cap was replaced and still same error shows.

After refueling and filling the fuel tank, a strong odor of gasoline emits from the outside of the car and inside the car. After checking online, previous complaints of fuel level sending unit seal failure causing pooling of gasoline around the sending unit next to electrical connectors and directly under the left rear passenger seat. I removed the rear seat and access panel to the sending unit and discovered pooled gasoline around the sending unit. The sending unit appeared tight. I did not notice any cuts or failure to the hose, just around the sending unit itself. My local Mercedes dealer claimed there are no recalls for this condition, even though there appear to be many complaints. The dealer also told me I would have to bring my car in to be inspected by a mechanic to truly diagnose the issue.

A strong odor of gasoline emanates from car after filling it up with gasoline. Had a mechanic trouble shoot and it was determined to be a leak in the fuel sensor which was causing gasoline to puddle on top of fuel tank underneath the back seat of the automobile.

2004 E320 Mercedes fuel smell possibly due to a recall issue of the fuel sender recall and/or fuel filler recall. I just purchased the car a couple of months ago and noticed this smell yesterday when I filled up my gas tank. I did some research and noticed that there was an emissions recall from Mercedes about these issues. I am scared that the recall part is leaking fuel and will blow up killing my family and I.
