2004 Mercedes Benz E-320. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle warranty extension for repairs of fuel tank leaks. The consumer stated in late 2009. He experienced a gas smell in the interior of the vehicle the smell became worse and eventually was noticeable outside the vehicle, too/ the vehicle was taken to the dealer to investigate and repair the problem. A leak was found on the left side of the fuel tank. The seal rings for the fuel level senders, fuel pump, filter assembly and harness were replaced in order to correct the fuel leak.

Fuel tank leaks and strong odor of fuel in passenger compartment after a fill up. Very dangerous combination. A fire is likely at some point. Took vehicle in for repairs under NHTSA action # EA13003 and Mercedes disavows any knowledge of extension of warranty and repairs. They want to charge me $2100. This is outrageous and unacceptable. Please help. You have negotiated a fix and they are refusing to do it. You should have made them recall the vehicles. Now we have just more headaches for owners of effected cars.

Strong smell of fuel when parked in the garage. This has continued to grow worse, and is very noticeable after fueling. There appears to be fuel pooling under the car as well as in the cabin under the rear seats.

We discovered that the car was leaking gas. We took it to the dealer who told us that the gas tank in this model had a problem and that it would be quite expensive to fix, approximately $2,000, he advised that this will likely only happen when we fill the tank and that we could prevent the problem by not filling the tank full...which we have done since but it is a great inconvenience and it scares us to think that we are driving a car with a leaking gas tank. Recently we became aware that there are many, many more owners like us and that there was a complaint process that we could use with the ntsb....I am responding within 24 of hours of knowing this. The Mercedes dealer was not forthcoming about this and did not fully advise us of the seriousness of the problem and we are very disappointed. We are now experiencing issues with the car in passing emissions testing in tn (where we now live)....fl did not have an emissions testing policy. We have an estimate from a certified Mercedes repair shop that it will cost almost $2,000 to fix this problem and we feel that it is a serious safety issue.

It's been about a year. When I fill up gas, it smells not only in the car also in the garage, even smell it in the room above the garage. I've tried several times to fix it in Mercedes auto repair shop, but it still smells. Just recently found out there are many other people having same problem, it seems a manufacture failure, and I wish a solution by Mercedes soon.

I have an issue similar to many other W211 chassis Mercedes owners. The fuel tank leak/fuel odor has been going on in my car and the dealership refuses to cover the costs of repair. They quoted a ~$2000+ repair job for what's obviously a manufacture defect.

Upon entering my closed garage in the early morning, I noticed a very strong gasoline smell. I took the car to my Mercedes repair shop (not a dealer) who informed me that there was a leak in the fuel sending unit and that this was a developing problem with E class cars. He said there were class action suits against Mercedes for this problem. He said Mercedes would not admit it was a safety problem. Well, it seems like a safely problem to me! I certainly hope my government's ntsb is looking into this. Are we waiting for people to be severely burned or killed due to this problem?

I have a fuel undercarriage leak from the rear passenger left side with a strong gas smell within the cabin of my car- this problem has been referenced many times in the mb forums and seems to be a national problem. I would appreciate a through investigation regarding this issue before a fatality ensues because of a faulty plastic piece designed by mb. This problem occurs when the tank is filled with gas, but over filled. I implore to do the right thing an implementing a recall for corrective actions.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

While driving I started smelling gas, especially when I would have just filled the tank. This smell went on for years, it got odor got stronger and stronger so finally I went and got it diagnosed and my mechanic said that I need replace my fuel pump and showed me the gasoline under the rear seat (rear driver's side) the amount of gas was so great that I called and asked my rep at Mercedes if there was indeed a recall on the part and I also told him that my mechanic said that there should have been a recall on it, and still he said no. So I replaced the part on my own. Now I am smelling the fumes again, I take it that it is coming from the other side. I have to ride with my windows down and/or sunroof open to keep from getting the head-aches again. This have been ongoing for years now. I purchased the car in Jan. 2008.

After filling up the fuel tank to full, I noticed a very strong fuel odor inside and outside of the car. Does not make any difference whether the car is moving or parked. The purge valve filter was replaced but the problem remains. I use this vehicle to Transport my newborn son daily. His car seat is on the right rear of the passenger compartment, directly next to the fuel filler area.

Filled up the vehicle and drove it approximately three miles to my home, parked vehicle in the garage. Later that evening I noticed a very strong fuel odor in the garage. Did some research on a couple Mercedes owners online forums that indicate that fuel leakage is a common issue with my 2003-2009 E series models. Removed the vehicle rear seat (fuel tank is located under seat) and the screwed-down inspection seal to view the fuel sending unit. Observed a significant quantity of fuel puddled on the top of the fuel sending unit. See photo at: screencast.com/T/aufw5K7lqz clearly there is a fuel leak and from my research this is a common issue with the 2003-2009 Mercedes E series models. From what I've seen, Mercedes dealers will not repair this issue under warranty or recall and typically charge $1500-2500 for repairs. Hundreds of Mercedes owner have documented this issue on forums at mbworld.org and benzworld.com 1. mbworld.org - mbworld.org/forums/W211-amg/363759-urgent-notice-03-06-E55S-were-involved-fuel-sender-recall-bombs.html 2. benzworld.com - www.benzworld.org/forums/W211-E-class/1602584-gas-smell-after-filling-up-tank.html there are many more threads like these and a class action lawsuit was filed as well. www.mercedesfueltankclassaction.com.

Inside of my vehicle began smelling strong gasoline odor presenting a fire hazard. I found severe leaking at seam at top of gas tank under rear seat of my vehicle & was required to replace gas tank assembly, fuel pump sensor, fuel pump & seals at cost of $2,014. I was told that a class action suit against Mercedes Benz involving year 2003 & later 320E autos for this issue was in progress in atlanta, ga. However Florida cars (owners) were excluded on a technicality!!. this danger exists on all cars, wherever located and should be immediately corrected by Mercedes. The danger of explosion and death is imminent in any of these autos. Mercedes is and has been aware of this problem for quite some time as was brought out in the class action suit and under our transportation safety rules should have recalled the autos years ago. This is a national problem, and Florida auto owners should be properly compensated for their loss as should be any other owners where ever located. Your advise and assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated..
