My Mercedes Service tech noticed a wet area around the seam of the plastic fuel tank (Saddle tanks). They indicated in the past that they had replaced the tanks nut, and Mercedes let them know that with the amount of complaints they would issue a campaign to address.

I called my local Mercedes dealer and spoke to a service advisor, they could not find any campaign addressing this issue.

This is a serious dangerous issue with a number of complains on the same issue throughout the internet.

I am hoping someone has has Mercedes address this and can provide a campaign number so i can go to the dealer to get this address.

Any help would be appreciated.

Update from Sep 22, 2020: I found a technical service bulletin on this issue: Fuel System Warr. Extension, Fuel Odors from Fuel Tank Area.

Date: June 10. 2015 Order number: P-B-47.10/63c Supercedes: P-B-47.10/63b, February 3,2015

Under this technical service bulletin it describes the problem and resolution, replacing the fuel pump, saddle gas tank and accessories.

The effective date is 1/9/2015. The problem will be the dealer will argue that the del date of the VIN is what is used as the base of the 15 year extended warranty.

You will need to discuss with MB to have it extended to cover your Vehicle.

My 2005 E320 has very low milage (58K).

In 2015 we started to notice the smell of gasoline following filling the tank with gas. The smell of gasoline is so strong that we had to open our garage doors to vent the fumes. No gasoline was spilled during refueling. There is no visible gas leak on the garage floor. The vehicle is a 2005 Mercedes-Benz E320 with only 44,000 miles. After researching this problem we discovered numerous other owners of this model Mercedes have experienced the same problem. Mercedes has no recall for this fuel fume defect and any repair is not within the original warranty period. NHTSA Action #EA13003 Summary Test & Analysis by Mercedes-Benz shows no risks of fire or passenger safety. This is BS as fuel fumes within an enclosed area, such as a garage where a natural gas hot water tank exists, could cause a fire. NHTSA needs to require Mercedes-Benz to recall the vehicles affected by this defect.

After fill up ( not topping off ) there is a very strong odor of gasoline inside the vehicle. The fumes are so strong that we have to drive with widows and sunroof open The fumes are also very strong inside the garage after the car is parked.

I have filed a complaint at safercar.gov but as of yet no solution or reply. I do see that there are several complaints for different models as well but no recalls to fix this problem.

My next stop is the Ga, State Attorney's office seeking help.

This is definitely a health and safety problem.

I have read SEVERAL complaints of this online. Whenever I fill up the vehicle, there is a strong gas odor inside and outside the car. I've checked the fuel sending unit on the left side (under the back seat). It leaks. I bought a new seal from the Mercedes dealer and replaced it. It fixed the problem for about a month...but then it returned. Now, I just don't fill the car up. I can even see where gas has wicked up the shoulder seat belt on that side. This problem has been talked about for such a long time. I can't believe it's that difficult for this to become a recall item. I really like my car and I know that all cars have issues of some sort...but this seems like an awfully serious one.
