Began noticing gasoline smell in garage. Traced smell to the car. The smell has now intensified that I can smell fuel as soon as I exit the vehicle. The smell is now prevalent regardless of the amount of gas in the tank! it smells really strong in the driver side rear wheel well. I can no longer park the car in my garage for fear of fire. The smell is now becoming noticeable in the cabin as well. My understanding is NHTSA is aware of the problem and Mercedes Benz will not acknowledge a design flaw. I suppose I or some other owner will have to go up in flames before anyone decides to do the right thing. How sad.

I brought my 2005 Mercedes E320 [purchased Oct. 2014] in for an oil change Jan. 30, 2014. I mentioned to the service person a noise [like something broke] I heard while out of town visiting. He changed my oil and also found/replace a broken rear suspension spring. This occurred within 3 months of purchase. Repair cost: $551.17. My second incident occured Feb. 19th. I noticed a puddle of fluid underneath the vehicle [not sure what kind of fluid] and immediately brought the car back to the dealer for service. I was told the transmission servo solenoid seals required replacing. Repair cost: $157.84. The third incident was reported Apr. 21, 2014. I noted an increasingly bad odor inside the car since the first day of purchase, but wasn't sure exactly what it was as I was still trying to identify it. I finally realized it was gas I was smelling [intermittantly] inside the vehicle for the last six months. It turned out to be leaking fuel from the left fuel pump seal (lfps) underneath the rear seat. Repair cost: $161.31. The fuel odor got worse after the replacing the lfps. Most noticeably after filling the car with gas. I've also identified gasoline leaking from the drivers' side rear quarter that puddled by the tire. My feeling at this time, repairs may be onging for my E320, that I really like.

On 02/24/2014 the emission light came on. The code was pulled that informed that the car had a leak some where in the fuel system. The car was taken to Mercedes Benz of South Mississippi, they informed me that there was a leak in the upper fuel tank under the back seat, and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The report said: To replace cracked fuel tank evaporation system has a leak. The repair would be $2100 to replace the fuel tank.

There is a very strong smell of gasoline in the cabin of the car after I fill the gas tank. The smell persists until about one-eighth to one-quarter of the tank has been used then dissipates. I have read where this is a common problem for this class and year of Mercedes. I just purchased the car. Is there a recall to solve this problem" if so, is there a reference number" if not, is there a service bulletin issued by your Agency or by Mercedes to its dealers to fix the problem. Mercedes should be compelled to fix this. The gas fumes are nearly incapacitating and certainly impair safe driving.

Our car was purchased off lease around November 2008. It had 47,000 miles on it when we purchased it. We noticed that when we filled the gas tank up the gas fumes were strong in the garage since the time we purchased the car. In March 2012 the check engine light came on while on a trip shortly after that gas tank was filled. I read the manual and stopped by an auto zone and they told me it was probably due to the gas cap being loose and the fuel tank loosing pressure and they cleared the warning. The light has come on a few times since then and I have had it cleared twice at auto zone since I did not think there was a big problem and I was in between services. Within the last six months I have had it the Mercedes service department and they told me they did not know why the check engine light was on and that they did not have enough time to find out what was wrong. Yesterday, September 25, 2013, I went to a Mercedes Benz specialists, local mechanic that only works on Mercedes and uses Mercedes parts, for an annual oil change and checkup and asked him to check out the problem that the Mercedes service department did not know what was wrong. He tested the fuel tank using a system to detect leaks and noted that the top of the fuel tank had a crack and I need to replace the fuel tank and it would cost $2,082. Over the past few years I just filled the tank to half or three fourths so it would not emit fumes, however, I filled it up for a trip last week and you could smell the fumes badly in the car. Our car has about 134000 miles on it now.

I purchased a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320 which has been garaged and very lightly driven. (only on weekends or days off) after six months and refueling a few times I started to notice an odor of gas in the cabin of the vehicle. This odor has gotten worse and stronger over time. The odor is also noticeable in the garage as well as around the exterior of the car. This seems like an indication that more gas is present and possibly leaking somewhere near the gas tank. I am fearful of driving it as the concern over fire is present as my kids ride in the rear seat. I would appreciate someone looking into/investigating this to see if it is indeed a Mercedes problem and possible recall prospect.

The contact did not call the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 71,000.

When the strong vapor of gasoline first occurred, I promptly took my vehicle to the dealership. After examination, the vehicle required a new gasket on the fuel sending unit. This corrected the strong fuel vapor after fill-up until now. In June 2013, with approximately 73,000 miles, the strong vapor reappeared both inside and outside the vehicle. Upon inspection by Mercedes Benz coral gables, I was told the vehicle required a new fuel tank, as there is a small crack at the top of the tank. The tank was not dropped, but rather, the diagnosis was based on previous experience by the service department. An occurrence they have seen in the amg class and appearing as well with the E class. I elected not to fix the problem as I was informed that as long as "you don't fill up all the way" it shouldn't be a problem. I subsequently called two additional mb dealers and the service writer at each business said the same thing. I want to make a formal complaint with the NHTSA so that my vehicle is logged with the many others and addressed by Mercedes, as it would appear this is a defect in the design of the fuel tank or a defective part. A recall is the only solution, and if Mercedes Benz's reputation is based on "safety", then this is the only viable resolution.
