This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Mercedes-Benz dealer.
The VERY STRONG smell of fuel inside and outside of the car after filling it is a very well documented and known problem to Mercedes. Mercedes finally acknowledged the problem and implemented a 15 year/150,000 miles extended warrenty for the issue; however, not all 2007 E350 VIN's were covered for some rediculouos reason and evidently the problem goes away after 15 years or 150,000 miles - it doesn't, it just gets worse and is extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening.
The 15 year extended warrenty expired on my particular car last October/November despite being well within the 150,000 miles MB offered. This issue should be repaired by MB at no cost to the owner/s regardless of miledge and/or time frame. Why should I have to foot a significant bill for a MANUFACTURING FAULT, that Mercedes acknowledged, just because the people I bought the car from didn't get the problem fixed or because I bought it when it became 15 years and 1 month old?
As stated, the very strong smell of fuel fumes both in and outside of the vehicle is a significant and very potential danger. Is Mercedes going to keep ignoring this issue until someone gets killed from an E350 exploding due to the fumes?
This problem was created during the manufacture of the vehicle in 2006/07. Mercedes needs to show a modicum of integrity and fix at their cost ALL vehicles with this problem regardless of age, miledge OR VIN number. This issue should have been an automatic RECALL situation and still should be.

Pungent fuel odor after filling up gas tank. The smell was so strong that it causes drivers nausea, headaches, and dizziness. RBM of Alpharetta states: "My tech found the fuel sending unit sealing ring to be cracked and leaking when he pulled up the back seat. Then he got the vehicle up in the air and could see fuel residue on the back side of the fuel tank that had dripped down from the top.
The solution for repair is to replace the fuel tank assembly, reason for this is your vehicle is a PZEV or partial zero emissions vehicle. The fuel tank and sending unit are sealed from the factory for zero emission standards.
When you arrived this morning I reviewed the VMI for your car to show you it was not part of the warranty extension for the fuel tank you spoke of. I still ran coverage for your vehicle to see if Mercedes would cover the repair but it is outside the warranty period for this repair."
I'm not sure of the integrity of Mercedes-Benz, but I will soon find out. This is obviously the exact same problem experienced on the vehicles under the recall, but since my vehicle was originally purchased in California (PZEV), they are denying the claim. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that the repair is much more significant than the traditional design. The PZEV vehicles need the entire fuel tank replaced versus the simpler (and less expensive) fuel sending unit for the non-PZEV cars. Otherwise, this is the exact same problem...only a different fix. This is a significant safety issue admitted by my service adviser. He stated, that the car is dangerous to drive in the current state. I am currently escalating with MBZ leadership and hoping they will hold integrity as a business and do the right thing.

Mercedes agreed to extend the warranty on the fuel system for the E 350, years 2003-2008 for 15 years and unlimited mileage. This was an arrangement with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Due to a fuel leak, I spend $1950.00 on part No 211 470 88 01 for a new fuel system. When presented with a claim, Mercedes declined coverage. The reason Mercedes gave, was based on its VIN number my E 350 was not part of the warranty extension. When asked the Mercedes representive could not tell me why my 2007 E350 was not covered were as another 2007 E350 might be covered. My feeling is Mercedes does not want to live up to the warranty agreement and uses the VIN NO declination as a quick way getting of getting rid of people like me.

Driving on the hwy at 75 and the car felt like it was not getting any fuel. Luckily, I was able to get to the off ramp and coast to the bottom. Got towed to the shop and he noticed the bad smell of gas in the cabin said this is a common problem and just changing the sending unit will not stop the leak...the tank needs to be replaced and he thinks there is a recall in place to have the dealer make the repairs. Have searched for awhile now and have yet to find the recall...Please let me know if there is one in place, I would like not to have to come out of pocket for an issue that MB is very aware of or maybe they are still reeling from the last Class Action on the engine of these cars. I noticed the smell but always thought it was me from working around vehicles but friends and family have noticed this whenever I fill the tank...just glad I don't allow anyone to smoke in the vehicle or I might not be able to file this complaint. Hugh safety issue that MB needs to address or someone needs to get their attention and create a Class and get this resolved once and for all.

My car has a strong gasoline odor. The dealership said the fuel tank is leaking and needs to be replaced. They have denied warranty coverage on a leaking fuel tank. Please reference NHTSA # EA13003. This problem has been acknowledged and a warranty program put in place by Mercedes Benz to avoid a recall. Now, they are denying warranty coverage.

I bought the used car which is immaculate. I filled the gas tank up and drove home. The next morning I smelled gas in the laundry room and opened the garage door. The whole garage smelled of gas and I dared not turned on the light. I grabbed a flashlight and saw a major fuel leak under rear passenger seat. I brought the car to the local MBZ dealer with the printout that Shows MBZ agreed with the NHTSA to cover warranty on gas tanks, fuel pump etc. for 15 years and unlimited mileage. The dealer saw and smelled the gas leakage and said its not covered because it has a pixeo gas tank installed at the factory. $200.00 just to tell whats wrong! Where do I go now? I brought the NHTSA print out. 103,000 miles Model E350 2007 year

Smell of gas near driver side. Strong smell to the point where people would get headaches in the car.

I discovered that there are numerous complaints regarding defective fuel tanks in this particular year/ make/ model vehicle. We the consumers have paid a great deal of money for these vehicles; therefore we deserve to have this problem taken care via recall. Mercedes Benz needs to step up to the plate and take care of this issue NOW!

My fuel pump died in December. The extended 15-year/150K miles warranty expired a year earlier. I was told that I have to replace the entire fuel tank, because the fuel pump is part of the fuel tank in the PZEV cars. I already replaced it in 2010, so this will be the third fuel tank! MB extended the warranty for 15 years for non-PZEV fuel tanks for unlimited miles for the same problem. The NHTSA should have never allowed MB to accept the extended warranty in place of a recall. Furthermore, per the posts on this site, there are a lot of us getting stuck paying for the manufacturers defect. I've contacted numerous people at my local Mercedes dealerships, MBUSA and even the headquarters in Germany. Their reply, "You're out of luck, the warranty is expired." I also found other MB warranty extensions for 20 and 25 years, so why is this one only for 15 years? Did MB think that the problem would disappear after 15 years? News alert, it didn't!
