About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
This is in regard to E350 2010. Gas smell after tank fill up (only when full). Fuel pump cover on the driver side under the back seat. The tank cover (plastic) breaks and leaks. Similar problem was noted on previous models (2009) and recall was issued. [XXX] Very hazardous (Flammable and combustible) and the dealer stated that it is a common problem. I removed the back seat and is gasoline leaking and accumulating above the cover. Similar problem occurred on the cover on the right side and was replaced. The plastic cover on both sides breaks and leaks gasoline into the car. Should be recalled and replaced. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Very strong exterior exhaust odor, like gasoline, consistent and always prevalent but more so when fuel is at half or above. Afraid may spark if near open flame
- Austin , TX, USA
Strong fuel vapor odor from vehicle when more than 3/4 full. Residue on top of fuel system components under rear seats. Still present after replacing fuel filter, plastic seal-retaining ring and both seals. Recall for fuel system issued one model year prior and one model year after.

There is a strong fuel smell after we fill up gas. The smell is strong enough that we cannot put the car in garage because of the fumes entering the house when we open the garage door.

Many of us E class owners experience fuel smell coming from top of fuel pump under rear seat. Many complaints on various blogs about this fuel smell leak issue. Dangerous! obviously plastic gasket and sealing issues! very prevalent!

Fuel odor after refueling to full tank, gas odor only when outside of car. No gas odor after fuel level has dropped about 1/8th (7/8th still in tank). Can vissibly see fuel on outside of gas tank (wet and strong gas odor) when looking at fuel tank via rear passenger wheel well.

Gas leak smell coming from driver side rear of the car. Car only has 40,000 miles. I believe my car has the same problem as with other Mercedes class action lawsuit "2003-09 Mercedes-Benz E-class, 2006-11 cls-class fuel odor". please reopen the investigation to include E350 2010 model as well.
- Santa Ana, CA, USA
The vehicle emit a fuel odor from the rear. This is due to fuel leaks coming from the gas tank assembly. Mercedes Benz had these issue from 2003 to 2009 E class. My car make is 2010- E350 having the above problem besides takata air bag. What are my options" the dealer doesn't care of the issue. Will Benz resolve the issue "

Request NHTSA immediately re-open the investigation of Mercedes-Benz' deliberate & continued use of defective fuel system components. The warranty extension offered by mb for 2003-2009 E-class sedans on fuel tank components, including fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump & related gaskets/seals/retention rings, is not sufficient. Please require mb to extend the warranty to later model yrs & all E-class vehicles such as 2-dr coupe, not just the sedan. My vehicle has only 48,000 miles (driven <7,000 mi/yr) & fuel sending unit closing cover is now leaking. Gas fumes/leakage is so overwhelming that car cannot be driven or parked in a garage. Driver is in eminent danger of car bursting into flames if a spark or match is lit nearby. Plus owner risks damage/theft/bodily harm now being required to park on street rather than a secured garage. I've owned 8 other vehicles in my lifetime incl. Fiat, Oldsmobile, Ford, Toyota & Lexus. Never has any other vehicle had this problem. Plus several were 2X+ the age of this car & had 2-3X greater mileage. This fuel system problem is not caused by normal wear-&-tear or any fault of an owner. Repairs must be mandated by the NHTSA to be covered by mb due to fact that they have continued to use defective design & defective components, even knowing for years prior to manufacturing 2010+ models, this issue exists. The mb dealer wants to charge $1133.89 plus tax for the initial "closing cover" repair & will not guarantee that will even fix the problem. It may cost thousands more to have the entire fuel tank replaced if necessary. I implore you to seek justice for consumers like myself, harmed by mb's defective fuel tanks that allow fumes to seep into the cabin & broad area surrounding the exterior of vehicle, plus liquid fuel to leak on the ground. Please relpy with specific action I can take to rectify this deplorable situation.
