GLK350

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

GLK 350 sunroof shattered! Driving on interstate when I heard a crazy loud POP! It scared the bejeezers out of me but I didn't see a rock hit the windshield. I pulled over and examined the windshield but no rock chip. Chalked it up to weird at the time but several days later noticed my sunroof was completely shattered and starting to fall in on the cheap flimsy mesh liner below it. I am now very strongly presuming that it either 1. was potentially hit by a rock and shattered during the crazy loud POP event on the interstate or 2. randomly exploded or shattered without a rock chip. After reading other stories on the internet about random exploding sunroof on GLK 350 I have to wonder. Either way, the windshield and sunroof have major design flaws.

The sunroof in my 2013 GLK 4Matic spontaneously exploded with a loud pop - like a gunshot sound - and then crackled into hundreds of pieces for 5-10 minutes afterwards. Nothing hit the roof or anywhere on the car, and the weather was not too cold, not too hot. I was simply driving along and the top layer of glass on the sunroof exploded without warning. Fortunately, the bottom layer is still intact and so the glass did not shower down on me (yet). Mercedes is telling me it is a $6000 piece of glass and they are already giving me static about covering it under warranty. The car is less than 2 years old and is still under warranty.
