About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Frosting and discoloration of plastic head lamp lenses severely reduce light output, and are a serious safety hazard. This is caused by heat from the bulbs and perhaps uv radiation from sunlight. Lenses on my 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis became dangerous to drive at night at least two years ago (at 8 years old). Dealer (oem) replacements are $205 each, which is prohibitive for retired owners living on social security. By comparison, the old glass sealed-beam units lasted near-forever and only cost $5 to replace. Manufacturers should recall and replace these for free.
