My car eats cats. This is the second round with only 35000 miles between changes

Grand Marquis LS Ultimate 4.6L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 85,000 miles

This is a great car, but this is a known problem with both this and the Crown Vics. Internals on the cat are coming apart and rattling. Have not replaced them yet, but they will be replaced with some magnaflow catalytic converters.

Grand Marquis GS 4.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles

Cat came apart at 58,000 miles and began rattling as I drove down the road. VERY annoying.

So I took it to Bartow Ford expecting to get hit with a $1000 repair bill (apparently Cats are VERY expensive) but Low and behold (Thank God!) it was completely covered by Ford under the Federal emission warranty. I was unaware that Catalytic converters are covered for 8 years, 80,000 miles on all passenger vehicles in the US.

Whoo Hoo! I actually got the dealer for one!

Anyway, Great Car..Great Gas mileage, comfortable ride, no problems other then this one. I will buy another on as long as they stay just like this....

Update from Nov 7, 2010: I sold the car at 78,000 with no further problems at all... Very dependable car!
