Grand Marquis 4.6L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,000 miles

The first hint of trouble was a short trip of less than 5 miles. The steering seemed rough and jerky, and the power steering pump was howling by the time I got home. Upon returning home and noticing power steering fluid was low, I noticed a very bad leak when I was refilling it. In a couple of minutes with the engine running, the fluid level was low again. It was so bad I had it towed to the mechanic because I was afraid I would damage the pump or the steering rack if I tried to drive it. There is a power steering pressure switch in the fluid line, and it apparently went bad all at once. I had not noticed any leaking before the incident.

I noticed the power steering was suddenly jerky during turns. Upon arriving home, I discovered the fluid reservoir was low and there was a power steering fluid leak. The car has a pressure sensor in the fluid line that had gone bad, causing a massive leak. I did not know there was a sensor, so I assumed it was a major problem and had the car towed to a mechanic. Changing the pressure sensor should be an easy fix for a DIY type person.
