The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and travelled to the floorboard without any warning. In addition the vehicle stopped independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ABS pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 164,000. VIN was not available. Updated 03/16/17

The contact stated that the brakes failed to stop the vehicle and the brake pedal traveled to the floor in addition, the brake pedal had to be pumped a couple of times before the brakes could function. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the brake fluid bled and the anti-lock brake system failed and needed to be replaced. Takata recall while on both city street & highway in light snow brakes lock up and brake pedal stay low afterwards. Dealership says this is because it needs new hydraulic control unit cost $1500. Louisville ky news channel did program on this very problem last week in Dec '16. This is dangerous, expensive and is happening enough that our local news is reporting. Should be recalled.

After an ABS-assisted braking maneuver on snow/slick road recently, the brake pedal had no pressure "went soft, " and required extraordinary pressure to activate the brakes. I have to press down to the floor of the vehicle hard to activate the brakes. There is no resistance on the brake pedal. The vehicle has 116,000 miles currently. The same incident occurred in February 2015 when the vehicle had approximately 102,000 miles. Dealership performed ABS bleed twice which provided some boost to braking system, but not complete braking recovery. Brake pedal still feels soft. Mechanic recommended new hydraulic control module for $800 (part only)! very expensive repair that may be susceptible to year over year scrutiny due to irregular road conditions. In both instances, the vehicle was in motion and an attempt was made to brake on a slick, snowy, city road at no more than 15-20 mph. One instance was a left-hand turn and the other instance was traveling straight.

If the brakes are ever hit suddenly, the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor the next time it is used. Braking happens but only when the pedal nearly reaches the floor. This change in pedal location with no warning is very dangerous. The brake will re-set after some time, ranging from a few days to up to a month. I had the brakes servied (all wheels). My mechanic tested the ABS sensor and said that was not the problem. He was unable to diagnose the problem.

Takata recall for my vehicle. The areas in front on the dashboard look as though the entire system beneath the material wants to fall apart. As if the dashboard is slowing deforming. Brakes when pressing the brakes while driving over rough surfaces, wet surfaces, dry surfaces, or uneven surfaces the brakes will simply "go out". the brake pedal will go all the way down to the floor. Its almost like the brakes are experiencing a strong-winded belch. The brakes will not allow the car to come to a full stop even when pressing down full force on the brakes. It takes a few moments of holding the brake pedal down as hard as possible in order for the vehicle to truly stop. On even-flat surfaces, if I'm in a situation where I need to press down on the brakes immediately, the brakes will simply "go out". the many different surfaces refer to train tracks, flat/even paved roads, wet pavement roads that are moist or wet streets that have an uneven areas, or dry surfaces. After several attempts to regain the proper function of the brakes, the function will come back. I'm forced to pull over to the side of the road and turning on the hazard lights so I can constantly "pump" the brake pedal. Every day I get behind the wheel I'm afraid for my life and others on the road with my vehicle because the vehicle is very unsafe due to the improper function of the brake system and the poor airbags. The problem with the brakes happens to me every day I leave my neighborhood. It's so unsafe to not press the brakes before leaving my neighborhood. I have to roll over the area very slowly so the brakes don't "go out". in the front of my neighborhood, there is a crosswalk and kids are always walking past the neighborhood because the high school is right across the street. I have to slowly go over the rough area, which has 2 speed bumps and brick pavement in between the two speed bumps.

On 12-23-2016, involved in a car accident. Going down a slight hill while it was snowing. Couldn't get the vehicle to stop. Pumped on the brake and it wouldn't catch. When I got to the stop sign I pressed down on the brake and the vehicle slid through.

During normal driving conditions, at a speed of approx 35 mph in dry weather when my son pushed the brake pedal to come to a stop the ABS system kicked in and acte like in wet /slippery condition and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Car slowly come to a stop. After that he drove home slowly, but could not duplicate brake issue again. This happened in November 17, 2016 and since than the brakes seem to work ok.

Had to replace the ABS hydraulic control unit. Previously when the ABS triggered the pedal went soft and the braking forces was significantly reduced. Braking returned to normal after the car was shutoff for an hour or so.

Like in a recent NHTSA notice, my brakes went soft when braking on on uneven pavement on a city street and I continued into the intersection before stopping. No accident occurred. I pumped the brakes several times and the brake pressure returned though felt soft the remainder of the trip of 10 miles. This accurred in November of 2016. I got a brake job from the Ford dealer following this incident. I was getting close to needing a brake job anyway. After your recent notice I'm concerned that the issue still exists and can reoccur.

The first time I lost the brakes I was going through a roundabout when I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a car that pulled out in front of me. As I deployed the brakes, I hit a pothole which caused the ABS to activate. The pedal went to the floor and I had to quickly change lanes to avoid an accident. It took several hours for brakes to return to normal. The second time, I slammed on my brakes when traffic came to an immediate halt. I had plenty of time to stop, but again when the antilock brakes were activated, I lost pedal and had to go into the median to avoid rear-ending the car in from of me. Again, several hours later the brakes returned to normal. I was able to create a similar scenario to show my husband just by slamming on my brakes at the end of our neighborhood where sand laid on the asphalt. He bled the brakes and the problem appeared to be resolved, but unfortunately it was not. The last time it happened, my 19 year old daughter was driving it. She lost pedal after antilock brakes were activated and, being a new driver, clipped the vehicle in front of her. Fortunately no one was hurt and we were able to resolve the accident without involving authorities. After this I have not allowed her to drive the car and it sits in the garage as we debate fixing the cosmetic damage due to the brake problems. The date below is an approximate date of the first time it happened. The last time it happened was in August 2016. It has happened approximately 5 times through the years, but has been few and far in between since it is not often the ABS is activated. The only time it has been driven since August was to take it through emissions.

When braking, I have to put the brake pedal to the floor and many times ended in the intersection while doing so. I have to pump the pedal 2 sometimes 3 times for it to stop correctly. The brakes thump also when I press the brake pedal. It is especially bad when driving in the snow and ice. This has been happening for some time and on the local news today, I saw that there is a problem with 2007-2009 Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion automobiles.

After a car pulled out in front of me I was forced to slam on my brakes. After this incident, during which time ABS did activate, I had very little pedal. I brought my vehicle into a local repair shop and the cause was determined to be (incorrectly) the master cylinder. The brakes were also bled and the ABS system scanned, but the problem persists.

The brake pedal went soft as my wife was driving the vehicle on a snowy city street on her way to work. She was able to stop eventually but the stopping distance needed was greatly increased. Scared her to death. We took it in to a Ford dealer (bill brown) and it was diagnosed as having a faulty ABS system and needed the hcu module replaced to the cost of $1459.48. We inquired if there was a recall on such a dangerous issue as this. They looked it up and from there was no recall. We were outraged by both the danger of the issue and the cost of the replacement. We do have a repair invoice #583098 from bill brown Ford in livonia mi. But I have no way to scan it electronically and upload to you.
