Purchased the 2008 Mercury Milan used in 2011. First experience with anti lock brakes, so the first time on wet pavement approaching light and the brake pedal jiggled when being pressed, concerned the car would not stop. Brake pedal from that incident stayed low for a couple of days, but then returned to normal position when pressed. This issue occurs when pressing brake over potholes, in wet conditions. Unfortunately, this recent episode has lasted for more than 10 days which caused me to take car to dealer repair and to do research which led me to enumerable complaints about this vehicles defect. I have read post of those who have spent over a thousand dollars to have repaired and still experience the problem, we are a one car family and I am not in a financial position to invest money and not get the results of having resolved. This issue (ABS) regarding the 2008 Mercury Milan is unacceptable and there needs to be a recall on this matter.

While driving if hitting a speed bump, pot hole, or something similar the ABS would kick in. This would cause the brake pedal to be pushed all the way to the floor before the brakes would engage. The last time this happened was just driving and came up to the stop sign and the ABS acted as if it kicked in and had to push the brake pedal all the way down. Normally after turning the car off and back on the brakes would go to normal, but has not this time. Changed the brake pads, front and rear, the master cylinder, and still no improvement. After reading that there was a recall on other years for the ABS, found that the ABS is the problem with mine as well. Have recently read that other vehicles are having the same problem as mine. ABS kicking in for no reason and not having brakes until the pedal is completely pressed to the floor. This started happening since I hit 80,000 miles and now have 89, xxx and it has recently gotten much worse, unable to drive the vehicle and unable to afford to fix it.

Yesterday was a wet, rainy day. I braked coming to a stop light, but hit a pothole just after touching the brake. My brake pedal suddenly became "soft", meaning that I had to depress the pedal to the floor in order to stop safely. I've read similar complaints from other people.

When ABS system engages the car fails to recover. Brakes do not respond, pedal hits floor before stopping. This started at about 80,000 miles. The vehicle now has about 100,000 miles and it has happened about 6 times. Most times the car recovers on its own within 24 hours (usually within 2). This time it has been 3 days, the car will not recover on its own. No codes are generating. No lights are on. The car thinks it is functioning properly.

I purchased my car in 2009 used at 25,000 miles. I am experiencing trouble with my master cylinder. As I went over a pothole and pressed on my brakes, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I took my car to a mechanic and he stated it was the master cylinder. I had my master cylinder replaced and I am still having he same problem. An ambulance stopped in front of a car ahead of me and I had to slam on brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor. I went back to the mechanic and he stated the master cylinder was brand new. He told me to look up to see if there is a recall on the brake system. Thank goodness I have not experienced an accident yet. I wanted to have this on file....updated 12/03/15

When braking over a speed bump, ABS engaged unnecessarily. After which, in order to decelerate via braking requires depressing the pedal 3/4 of the way to the floor board. Once at the 3/4 position the brakes will engage momentarily then become "loose" once again, requiring the driver to depress the brake pedal 100% of the brake pedal's travel distance to the floor board.

When traversing over a speed bump, ABS was engaged unnecessarily. After which, the driver is required to depress the brake pedal 3/4 of the brake pedal's travel distance to the floor board in order to initially engage braking. Once at the 3/4 position, braking then becomes "loose" and therefore requires the driver to depress the brake pedal the remaining travel distance to the floor board. This has lead to a major deterioration in braking performance as a result.

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Milan. While driving at approximately 15 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact pumped the brake pedal multiple times until the vehicle stopped. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the master cylinder was replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic and the ABS system was replaced, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,000. After ABS engaged (seemed unnecessary) brake pedal goes low and stays low. Car still stops ok but pedal requires long stroke to develop stopping power. Brakes engage at proper height, but braking force does not increase until pedal near floor.

Vehicle went over a slight bump when braking and the ABS engaged for a second or two. The brake pedal went to the floor and had to be pumped very hard to get the vehicle to eventually stop. The brake pedal remained very soft and close to the floor thereafter. The brakes would work, but the pedal was not nearly as responsive as before the incident. The dealer found no codes triggered, replaced the rear calipers, added brake fluid and bled the brake system. The pedal was a little more normal and the brakes worked. The same thing happened again about 6 months later. This time the dealer said there was a code triggered that said the ABS control unit needed to be replaced at a cost of about $1,200, and the master cylinder may also have to be replaced at a cost of about $350. I did a google search to see if other owners of Milan's or tauruses reported similar problems and found many complaints about the same thing. This is a serious and expensive safety defect with these vehicles. Is there any hope the manufacturer will pay for the repairs?

05/16/12 I was driving at 30 miles/per hour, the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor without any signs in advance, I couldn't stop the car. Luckily it was where I worked. I pulled to the parking, stopped it with the help of the curb. Checked on the spot, it seems low on brake fluid, we added fluid, pedal seemed fine for couple of months. On 07/31/12, two months after the first incident, driving at the speed of 50, the same thing happened again. Couldn't stop the car, the brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily there is a garage by the side, pulled in and checked. Finding out the mass cylinder disfunction. Spend over 600 got it changed. Now I am scared, don't know what to do" sell the car" ( which I cant afford now) or waiting to be killed in the car or kill somebody else?

The vehicle was repaired however the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to dealer where the master cylinder was found defective a second time. The current mileage was 103,000. The failure mileage was 100,600.
