The brake pedal had excessive travel. When pressure was applied to slow the vehicle, the pedal would not hold steady, but would drift to the floor. The vehicle would slow down and stop, but when slowing from a relatively high speed, it was necessary to "pump" the brake pedal. One would have to wonder if total brake failure would eventually occur. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair. It was in the shop for several days, as no reason for the problem could be determined. Eventually they contacted Ford for technical assistance in diagnosing the problem. According to their tests, the problem was with the hydraulic control module, which was bypassing brake fluid internally, and it was replaced. While it has only been a few days since the repair, the brake performance is much improved. I checked online and see that there have been problems with Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan having brake failure. I believe that this is a serious problem that could result in injury or death. Drivers of my vehicle, even after repair, anticipate potential brake problems when we drive.

Exact same issue as reported in 2007-2009 Mercury Milan. Brakes are super soft after I had brand new brake pads, rotors and calipers put on and had the lines bled for any air in them. I almost crashed due to this issue a few times with one being almost deadly. I was driving roughly 55 miles an hour on a highway when I tried stopping and the brakes basically gave out for no apparent reason. I lost control of the vehicle but was able to avoid a crash and almost had a heart attack from it. The brakes continue to be super soft and it requires a lot of distance to make sure my car stops on stop signs and traffic lights in time. It is extremely unsafe and I basically cannot drive my only vehicle that I have.

The contact owns a 2010 (na) Mercury Milan. While attempting to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard without warning. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brakes and rotors were corroded and were cleaned up by the technician. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (bill brown Ford in livonia, mi) where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic unit, all four brakes, and the rotors needed to be replaced. The failures were not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and a voice message was left with a representative. The contact stated that no one returned the call. The failure mileage was 33,808. I was driving in the road and drove over a pothole. As I pressed the break pedal, the pedal vibrated and went "soft." I had to press the brake all the way down to the floor to get the car to stop. It happened three times. The first two times, the brakes return to normal in a about 15-30 minutes, but after the third time, the breaks stood "soft." I talked to service specialist at a Ford dealer and they are aware of this problem. My investigation lead to this problem affecting Milan from 2009 and below. Well mine is a 2010 and it also has this issue.

While my vehicle is in motion, every time that I hit a large bump or have to engage the ABS system by having to stop very quickly, the brake pedal goes so soft that even to stop at a stop light after going at low rates of speed, I have to push it all the way to the floor so that I can come to a full stop. The problem eventually corrects itself, but it takes at least a few hours and sometimes up to a day or more. This can happen in all any driving condition (city street, highway, driveway, etc...), and at any speed (as low as 5 mph). I recently read that 2007-2009 models were being investigated for the exact same reason, and wanted to make sure that the 2010 model was added to the list because I feel very un-safe driving my car sometimes, and the ABS system is such a vital component to a safe drive. Also, after reading the next page, the most recent instance happened just yesterday (5/21/17), but this has been going on since I bought the car in January of 2011. My mechanic has never been able to experience it, so he doesn't know how to fix it, but from what I've read, the hydraulic brake controller is the faulty part. Can you please put a re-call out on this??

With some snow and ice on road on 1/8/17 in roanoke, va, car brakes went almost all the way to floor and then rear wheel started locking up intermittently. This occurred as backing out of driveway and starting down residential street. I got out of car and had son drive back into driveway. I witnessed the drivers side rear wheel locked down for about 30 ft. Before the wheel started rolling again. Was going very slow at time so no accident. Struggled just to get car back in driveway. Will take car to dealer when weather clears.

When driving my vehicle downhill, the brakes do not grab at all. Most times on the road, they work fine. Had mechanic check master cylinder, pads and rotors. All checked out fine. He's had other vehicles with same problem, changed all the previous listed parts without any success. Upon changing the ABS module, the problem is solved. My husband's company has a fleet of Ford Fusion (basically same car as my Milan) and people have encountered this same problem which has been resolved when the ABS module is changed. I have also read of many other complaints regarding the exact same issue online. I believe this poses an extremely dangerous situation. The brake pedal goes completely to the floor. I have to use my emergency brake. I have to wonder how many accidents were caused due to the ABS module interfering with the brakes ability to work properly. My car currently only has 25,000 miles and has already been recalled for their lights. June 2015: Made a 'hard stop' to get out of path of emergency vehicle. Made 2 turns (slowing car down) and safely made turns without incident. Third turn (right turn), released gas pedal, stepped on brakes, brake pedal went low (towards floor), car eventually stopped, approximately 15ft, further than expected. This happened within 10 minutes from initial 'hard stop'. checked brake fluid level, noticed fluid level above minimum line, but also noted fluid color had some color (aware that color in brake fluid is not good). Made appointment for service at dealership authorized service center.service center indicated brake lining problem (not within tolerance), and replaced them. Note: City driving, dry day, light morning traffic. No brake warning light or ABS warning light illumination on dash board. July 2015: Exiting one highway to get onto another highway, needed to brake to get onto exit ramp. Took foot off gas pedal, signaled to turn right, stepped on brake to slow down and exit. Brake pedal went low (towards floor), car took more time to slow down than anticipated. Made way to destination (at reduced speed) and depressed brake pedal to identify if/how car could stop. Called service center, explained what occurred and brought car back to service center. Service center identified master cylinder needed replacing and it was replaced. Note: Highway driving, dry day, midday traffic-light. No brake warning light or ABS warning light illumination on dash board. August 2015: Local driving, on highway, exiting to the right, took foot off gas pedal, then started to depress brake pedal. Car started to slow down then felt rapid thumping underfoot while depressing brake pedal, brake pedal went low (towards floor). Car eventually stopped. Check brake fluid level (at max line) and fluid color clear. Car towed to dealership service center. It is still there.

The driver's side break light is hyderactive when my headlights are on. When the headlights are off the break light works fine. This seems to be a popular issue with many Mercury milians. The part was $377 to replace it and I have no had the car a full year. Also my driver's side actuator in my headlight went as well. My first car purchased ever and it was Ford and I have had nothing but issue with the car. Disappointing.

It first started with the passenger rear tail light. The led brakelight failed, led lights are known to last for 20+ years and these lasted about four. After that a bulb went out, when the bulb was replaced it still didn't resolve the issue. There are two components to the tail light, an inner light attached to the rear trunk and a outer light on the actual rear body. First, the inner passenger went out, then the inner driver's and then the outside passenger. Now finally, the outside driver's side has started flickering. Doing minor google searches immediately returns results with other vehicles having the same problem.

Driver side tail lamp assembly is not functional seems the led portion of the taillight assembly needs to be replaced at a cost of $400-500 from the dealer. This is the second taillight in the 2 years of ownership that it has had to be replaced. Very poor design and safety concern of mine since this is no longer a $2 bulb replacement but an entire taillight assembly.

The initial incident in November, 2013 was the failure of the passenger side rear led tail light assembly. This resulted in the brake lights not operating when the brakes were depressed. A police officer stopped the car for a warning due to the brake light failure. Mileage on the car at the time was 12,700 miles. Due to the safety hazard the repair was needed. The entire assembly, not just a single bulb needed to be replaced. Approximately 10 months later in September, 2014 the driver side rear led tail light is now malfunctioning in the same way. Brake lights are again flickering and not working when the brakes are depressed. Mileage on the car at the time of this next failure was 16,100 miles. The dealer quoted price to repair is over $450! this car is garage kept, well maintained and has not been in involved in any accidents. Ford should fix this defect under a safety recall free of charge to customers!

Driver side rear brake light staying illuminated constantly as if the brake is pressed and nearly caused crash (I had two small children sitting in the back of my Milan), had the vehicle behind me not went into the ditch a collision would have been inevitable. Please look into this problem as it has the potential to cause bodily harm and injury to the occupants. I had no idea there was a problem with constant illumination until this point. Upon scheduling an appointment at the Ford dealership and doing a little research I see this is a frequently reported problem but no recall has yet been issued nor an investigation. Also since learning of this problem this morning and observing the vehicle brake lights there is also a flicker of lights every so often.

Right rear brake light stays engaged constant, 100% luminous when headlights are on. Dealer replaced complete tail lamp assembly January 1, serviced February 2012 under warranty. Mileage 32141. Now a second time same problem with same right lamp. Not sure how long it has been that way. I was notified by family member when they were following me home one evening. 70000 miles. These led lamps are expensive, seems as if lighting has faulty parts assembly malfunction instead of a routine light replacement. Multiple complaints listed here for same issue. Is there a recall? I have not received anything for a recall. Now has become a safety concern.

Rear left brake light is malfunctioning -- local shop said it is not the bulb, rather the whole rear (left) light assembly and the sensor attached to the brake pedal. This car only has 18,000 miles on it -- this should not be failing at this point -- cost to repair is approx. $1000 (for parts, labor) -- others also believe this to be a manufacturer defect -- a 'recall' should be done -- the brakes are a safety issue -- if the driver behind you doesn't see the brake lights come on, the Milan can get read-ended.
