About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
My car goes into limp mode when the cruise is set and it approaches any incline.
- Tontogany, OH, USA
The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Montego. While driving with the cruise control activated, the contact depressed the brake pedal to slow down, but the vehicle failed to stop. The brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed and the vehicle felt as if the vehicle were accelerating. The contact stated that the vehicle was out of control. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over at 60-65 mph and quickly powered off the engine. While the vehicle was in neutral, the contact restarted the vehicle and it operated normally. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,300.

When driving the car comes to a sudden stop and only allows me to go 20-25 mph. Very unsafe. I was on the freeway going about 65mph and then engine lost power - speed dropped to 20 mph on the freeway. Luckily I was able to pull over in time avoid a high speed collision. The sudden engine power loss happens going at different speeds even as slow as 30 mph. The RPM needle goes up and down. I have had the the throttle body cleaned at the dealer from a previous recall, and have gotten the throttle body cleaned again.

As I backed out of a parking space, the car surged & I hit another parked car behind me. Even though I had my foot on the brake, the car accelerated for a few seconds. I then placed the other foot on top of the right foot & put the gear into park & the car stopped.

Car was completly stopped at a red light. Then all of a sudden the car lurched forward 5 feet with foot on the brake. This makes the 3rd or 4th time in the past year it has happened. Lucky no one was in front of me.
- Woodstock , GA, USA
The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Montego. While driving approximately 10 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal upon approaching a traffic stop signal. The vehicle suddenly lunged forward without warning. The failure recurred whenever the brake pedal was engaged during a complete stop. The failure became progressively worse. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The VIN was unavailable.

I experience a sudden acceleration when I am pulling into or backing out of a parking space and pulling into my driveway. I purchased this car used two years ago, so it might not be the first occurrence.

Our 2006 Mercury Montego lunges, and suddenly accelerates with no foot pressure on the gas pedal. It is clearly a missed recall with issues with the throttle body. Ford knows all about this issue and so do you.....I am not the first to complain! do something before someone gets killed! the following site explains it all==> www.facebook.com/pages/Ford-freestyle-500-Mercury-Montego-throttle-body-recall/114094741973972?sk=wall.

Vehicle surged when put in reverse, vehicle lunged, engine ran rough and vehicle died. Vehicle was hard to control with service brakes. This happened several times and the check engine light came on. Codes P2106 and P061B are showing. Vehicle has been surging for a couple of years, only slightly when shifted into gear.

We own a 2006 Mercury Montego and we have an acceleration problem that seems to be happening more and more. After starting the vehicle with the brake applied and I shift in reverse, the engine will rev up and try to force the car to move so I apply mt brakes even harder. This only lasts a few seconds. Then I shift into "drive" and with the brake still applied, it may do it again and try to take off when in fact I was not yet ready to press on my accelerator and it just wants to accelerate on it's own. I have researched the Montego as well as other Ford product's and here is an example www.fordtaurus.net/forums/viewtopic.php"F=5&T=4399&view=next that is pretty much what our car does and it can be very dangerous!!! how often does this happen" almost daily but not all the time and that's the scary part because you have to be ready for it or it may catch you off-guard and you very well could run into another vehicle in front or back of you or possibly maybe injure or kill someone. This needs to be looked into....please!!! there are no recalls on this vehicle that I can find but there sure needs to be. Similar Ford product's have this issue and we need someone with some authority and ability to research the issues on these Montego's!

I turned on road heading South and increased speed to limit of 55 mph and set cruise control. The road sloped slightly downward and the car was not requiring gas. The sensor got confused and the engine cut out leaving me suddenly without power. I was able to pull over off the road put the car in park and restart it I di not have a recurrence but am very concerned about safety. I took car into a dealer and they reset the software but told me it happens to all car manufacturer on a rare occasion and could not guarantee that it would not happen again. If I was not in the right hand lane I could have difficulty.
