Went to my mechanic to replace brakes in my 2002 Mountaineer and he advised me that the right coil spring was cracked . That if I were to keep the car ( which I was planning to) you need to replace it. The cost is approximately $500.00 . I cannot understand a cracked coil spring on any car, specially one that does not haul anything or carry heavy equipment. I have never had or heard of this problem. Why Mercury did not have a recall on this problem. Can this be covered by Mercury?.

The rear coil spring must have had a crack in it before it failed. you could see a rusty area and then a clean break area. I know they had a recall on ford focus springs I just wonder why they never had a recall on these springs with the number of complaints i see online about explorer and mountaineer's with broken rear coil springs.

The right rear coil Spring on our 2002 Mercury Mountaineer (same as a Ford Explorer) is broken. We noticed the vehicle "leaning" a few months ago but didn't realize that the spring was broken until I was bleeding the brakes and a chunk of spring fell off.

This is a grocery getter, we don't haul anything heavy, no trailer. No off road, no accidents, just suburban driving. There is no reason for this spring to fail.

It seems to be a problem when several people have reported that the same spring on the same location.

Any interest in this Ford? I have had the vehicle for awhile but this is something that shouldn't fail like this.

my right coil spring cracked and broke off less than 1 year of me purchasing my truck. My mechanic showed me the broken spring. It was completely broken. According to the mechanic, it will cost me approx. $800 for them to repair it. This is ridiculous! I should not have this kind of problem on a vehicle that was less than 5 years old when I bought it. This is Ford's mistake and they should own up to it & correct the problem.

FORD HAS DECIDED TO GO WITH A LOW QUALITY OE SPRING. THE SPRING IS LOCATED ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE TRUCK. ISN'T KIND OF ODD THAT THAT IS THE SAME SIDE OF THE VEHICLE THAT THE TIRES WERE BLOWING OUT AND CAUSING ACCIDENTS BEFORE. MAYBE IT IS NOT THE TIRES BUT THE REAR SUSPENSION THAT WAS CAUSING THE ACCIDENTS. HOW DID THE TIRES KNOW THEY WERE ON THE BACK RIGHT REAR? ARE TIRES THAT SMART, NOW? FORD SAYS IT IS AN MANUFACTURING PROBLEM CAUSED AT MANUFACTURING PLANT IN LOUISVLLE, KY. NO WAY..IT IS THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION NOT BEING PROPERLY ENGINEERED. ITS IS FORD'S FAULT AND NOT THE TIRE MANUFACTURER'S FAULT THAT THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION IS FAILING AND PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES OVER THIS. SHAME ON FORD!

Garage mechanic stated he has seen a lot of these Ford coil spring failures. He said it appears as though Ford purchased these from South of the border and that the material forging was faulty and not up to transportation specifications. Ford has recalled springs from other vehicles, the Focus and Sable.....it will eventually realize that they have a truck problem as well. Ford cannot just dump the truck business like it did with their car business or else they would have no business left, Ford stock at 7.90 a share, if this continues it will be under five bucks shortly.
